I compared 4* UPP vs. EX + PS, who agrees w/ what I found?

I wanted to do a side by side comparison between 4* UPP and EX + PS. I want to see what will look best for my black street/strip Mustang. I still have original rear roof modlings left over that were replaced before the new black paint job I got in September. The extra panel is black too but in poor shape.

I first started with 3M PIII MG to get as nice a surface as possible. I had the panel on a table and had to hold it still, but it was small enough that I was able to spend a lot of time on it. I then gave it a good once over with AIO to get a nice base for my comparison. One half I did 4* UPP applied via the bottle's directions, same for the EX + Souveran side (24 hrs apart for the wax). That meant I got a chance to compare 4* UPP vs. just EX too before the Souveran went on. Here are my opinions:

4* UPP vs. EX: The UPP side looked much darker. The EX side was obviously not as black. UPP is SUPER slick, almost like the product wasn't wiped off. UPP did look more "plastic" than the EX... a bit like cling wrap but not in a bad way. The EX was nice and soft to the touch but that UPP slickness is something else.

4* UPP vs. EX + PS: The Souveran paste darkened the paint a little more but to my surprise, the sealent look of the UPP still looked like a darker black than the Souveran. PS did get a little slicker but still nothing like UPP. The UPP looked like it had olive oil on its side vs. the PS. The PS certainly was an improvement over just EX but overall just looked very "clean". You could tell much more that there was a product on the UPP side. If I didn't know what was used, I'd be much more prone to ask what was on the UPP side. The EX + PS side looked much softer, smoother, less contrast in reflection. I think for the flashy nature of my Mustang, the bling factor of the UPP might be more fun.

Its tough to put descriptions like this in writing... Am I in line with your opinions?

A lot people like UPP. I have some limited experience with EX and EXP+ from watching its effect on mtodde's Solara. It is truly an excellent product, EXP+ looks terrific.

My bet is that the PS may look "wetter" than UPP but it seems you can't go wrong either way.

I will be trying some UPP soon.

I just used UPP over AIO on my dark blue Jetta 2 weeks back.

Even after 2 weeks, the car looks very wet and slick.

I think that this will be my goto LSP.

Lee,

I think you will really like UPP. I have two coats of it on my car and yesterday I quick detailed with Four Star's quick detailer. My car looks better now than it did before Thanksgiving when I put the second coat on. UPP is the best looking product I have ever used and seen on silver.

Yep, UPP is a very nice product. On silver, and other light colors, two coats of UPP topped with P21S/S100 or Natty's wax looks excellent! :xyxthumbs

Those carnauba toppers make it just a "tad" wetter........ and that's nice. :D However, you will loose some of the UPP slickness......... no doubt about that!

I've come to like the idea of applying UPP and enjoying its slickness, then topping with a Carnauba a couple of weeks later when the slickness dies out but the protection is still there.

This kind of goes back to the whole "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" type of thing. Some folks like slickness, some like depth, others wetness & still others great reflectivity.

My problem is that I like them all, LOL. Like TW85 & SilverLexus, I'm pushing the limit of what I can get out of my silver paint.

The biggest thing is the prep work...a good prep job will make any good LSP look great...I choose different LSPs based on the look I'm after.

I love UPP. It's definitely going to be my go-to sealant for customer details. The thing that excites customers the most is the slickness, so UPP is a prime candidate for that effect. It looks awesome on my car and my mom's blue/green Concorde, so I assume it will look good on any car.

The first cars I'll be doing in spring are silver, blue, and red. I'll try AIO + UPP on all of them and see how it goes. I don't expect to be dissapointed.

I certainly appreciate the difference between the UPP I applied and the EX + PS... I've been staring at my test panel and I can easily talk myself into liking either one... they're that different. The UPP is so extremely reflective side by side with the extremely wet look of the EX + PS, IMO its definitely one of the best sealent looks next to one of the best carnauba looks. I decided to do the whole car first with AIO + UPP... only because its slightly less time than AIO + EX + PS. Then I'll swap :).

Your observations are why I switched from UPP back to VM/CMW on my own car. I really like UPP's slickness but the look was too hard. I wanted a softer, deeper look.

I agree with you for the long term goal of my car, I just enjoyed UPP enough during my comparison that I want to do the whole car once before going to carnauba.

The cost comparison also put things in an interesting light - on one side I had a $15 sealent, on the other side a $15 sealent plus a $70 wax...

Tanguy-I really like UPP too, it is just that I prefer other products on black. On silver and pearls, UPP is very hard to beat. In fact, I made sure I still have some left because I have a silver BMW Z8 to detail on Tuesday. :)

"silver BMW Z8 to detail on Tuesday. "

Damn, one of my favorite cars Scott. Take your camera. We will pay for the film. ;)

I hear ya Scott... the other car in my garage is an Infinity G35 coupe in Ivory Pearl... its one of the most beautiful colors I've seen for a car, the hints of pink and blue speckles have that Mother of Pearl look - UPP should be gorgeous on it. EX + PS will be on the Mustang for the long run but I just want to feel that UPP slickness on it once before the switch to carnauba :). I'm too embarrassed of my el cheapo digital camera or I'd go snap some current pics, here's some from last July right before we moved in to the new house. The G35 was dirty... the Mustang was still all apart ready to have all new body parts painted - it is now all together and running.

Lee-pics of the Z8 are on my website...along with his M1! I detail the Z8 twice a year for him. The M1 about once every 18 months, he just doesn't drive it.

Tanguy-Beautiful G35 and that engine in the Mustang....
