Hows Does He Do It ?

Optimum's polishes will keep going like that, so will Ultrafina to a certain extent. No idea what he is actually using. Soft pad, well lubricated polish and low rpms and you can polish very smoothly for a long time.

He is using Autoperfection .

3m extra fine compound... And hes just been using a rotary for a loonng time. He says hes been "cleaning" cars since he was 13... OOO mannn i wish i have been working on cars since i was 13 :bolt

Dang, you have a sharp eye !

I guess youth has its advantages ...LoL

3m compounds cost as much here in Canada as in the UK, around $46-$56us for a bottle ! :furious:

Gotta love paul haha... he's really good with that rotary...

One thing I don't get is *** he is looking at in the paint that he polishes over the area as if he sees a spot in the carpet which needs to be rubbed out in a certain spot only... I'd love to know if I'm missing something, cuz when I look at the paint closely like that I see polish breaking down...

IIRC he mixes his own lubricating oils in with the polishes he uses. That, combined with low RPMS, lets him work stuff forever.

With my knack of diy projects (see cooking thread), this certainly gives me ideas. I would love to be able to work my Menz and 1Z polishes longer.

not really i just recognized the bottle... and the lid of the bottle gave it away.

How many other detailing products have yellow tops? haha

I gave my rotary skills another go at it this morning following Scottwax's suggestion of lower rpms using OHC on a white LC pad. One thing that helped out alot was noticing how Paul holds the bail handle in the video, notice he uses his fingers to support the weight of the rotary which facilitates the movement and precise control of where you what the rotary to go. :dance

I was quite surprise that with this method even using OHC I was able to get a hologram free polish. Pictures to follow after I am done with my Father Day's gift ...LoL

What kind of backplate is he using ? its smaller then the standard 6-3/4" backplates that come with most rotaries, I think I need the smaller backplate with a longer shaft.

On another note, I found a very inexpensive mod for the bail handle, using a strip from an old bicycle tubing I was able to make a rubber grip on the top of the handle which provides a better grip and more comfy on the palms. The tubing fits like a glove, you need to stretch it abit pass the larger sections, I used a tub of soap to make it glide in a little easier.

If you are using a rotary and coming out hologram free with a compound, you might want to try a prep solv wipedown. It is possible that you are just filling.

I haven't heard it from him, but other sources have suggested White Mineral Oil. It's apparently what Menzerna uses, and its cheap and locally available.

Yeah, that's the 3M 09553 that is 5". Unfortunately 3M doesn't carry it in the states. Polished Bliss in the UK sells it and will ship to the states (they also have the 6" blue Ultrafina waffle pads):

3M 125 mm Perfect-it III-Rotary Backing Plates - 3M Car Care and Detailing Products

Phil at Detailers Domain has imported some of the BP's, but they aren't cheap:

3M 09553 Perfect-it Backing Plate (Limited Qty)

There is also a group buy (BP and pads) at the PakShak forums but it might be too late to get in on that now.

How much of this oil goes into 1 bottle of polish? Can you add this to every polish?

I just received mine earlier this week. Cant wait to try it out.

forgive me as i've never used a rotary but... he seems to be quite irratic in his movements.. varying speeds and hitting some places much more than others. is this normal or is this just his method?

He's not erratic but it's pointless imo... I could understand polishing the edges like that since you never really get the "meat" of the pad on there so you go over it more and more, but what you said and what I'm talking about now has to do with him being able to somehow see the paint at a micron level and knowing he needs to polish that certain area more... I just don't get it
