How to you Clean Jams?

Well I was doing a car in a rush today (I had to work at a crappy location today and the garage is BARELY big enough for the car so I couldn't really work in it and it was going to rain). Anyhow, I was using Poorboys APC diluted 10:1 to clean wheels if they aren't bad, wheelwells, and door jams. Worked fine except in the door jams it would dry up and leave residue. Should I dilute it more or use something else?

Also, how do you get in by the hinges and stuff without killing your hands? Brushes? Spray it with soap and rinse with the hose?

One more - why do you recommend distilled water to dilute products? I used distiled for my IPA wipedown bottle, but I didn't for my clay lube (Zaino's car wash diluted) or the APC. Does it make a difference somehow?

Thanks guys!

Can try a QD with a mf towel. To get into the tight spots, if the towel is not good enough, maybe use your wash mit. As for the distill water, some say, distill water react diff than tap water with the product (and distill water is prob cleaner).

Hm.. Do you think my clay lube (Zaino wash and water) would work at a QD or should I get something else? I doubt this mixture will work for jams because even after I wipe off the clay lube when I'm done, it still leaves crap on the paint until my IPA wipedown.

I'll have to use distilled for all my mixtures next time, thanks :)

Nasty jambs- solvents for the initial work. Nice (i.e., polished and waxed) jambs- shampoo mix with careful rinsing (using small BHBs), or ONR, or *maybe* just QD if they're already really clean.

Polishing these areas makes them shed dirt easier, and waxing/etc. just like the rest of the car is always a good idea IMO.

I pretty much mirror Accumulator's suggestion. Once cleaned, I'll seal with my longest lasting sealant. Weekly clean up is accomplished with my damp MF drying towel once I've completed the body of the car. If it's a bit dirtier, I mist a little QEW or ONR on it and wipe with a plush MF. Works like a champ!

IME six layers of KSG is a nearly permanent coating on jambs; they don't get much exposure/etc. so the KSG just doesn't deteriorate. It's been well over a year since I did 'em on the MPV, with no changes that I can discern.

D'oh. Never thought of sealant on the jambs. I also never had a good solution for cleaning them until I started using ONR. Makes it very easy.

I just can't win with ONR :( The only wash-induced marring of consequence on my Yukon is from where I tried ONRing the door jambs instead of using my usual BHB approach. Sheesh...and I was being *so* careful too :o

Look into the Swissvax brushes at Detailers Domain. They are great for door jambs. All I use is a damp MF like some have suggested. If they are relatively clean I'll use a QD to spray in there and then an MF to clean it up.

your jams should be cleaned during the degreasing stage of the car. first rinse them down with some water. the water will act as a lubricant for any dirt next. take some all purpose cleaner and spray the hinges and the entire jam. let dwell a few seconds take a brush and adjatate all areas rinse with hose! your done. maybe use a onestep product for painted area.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I haven't tried waxing/sealing the jams yet but have always thought it would be a good idea.

I think I really just need some brushes. I have one brush from Advanced Auto for wheels that is falling apart and a scrub brush for carpeting lol Man, I love buying supplies but hate seeing my Paypal/Bank account go down lol!

I think I'll try rinsing (hopefully without shorting out harnesses/spraying interior), spraying with solution, scrub with a brush, rinse.
