How to tell if my car has been scratched?

Today a small dog came running up to my car and put its paws on the doors, leaving a visible streak in the disgusting salt crud on my black car. I'm concerned about potential scratches as a result. Is there any easy way to identify whether the paint has been scratched? I don't see anything on first glance, but...

wash the area, obviously. then try a halogen lamp on the area. guaranteed it'll show every teeny imperfection in the paint. Rule of thumb: if you can't see it, it's not there :)

Also check under sodium lamps like the ones in gas stations, street lamps, and large parking lots - they show everything!

Had the car washed today and when I look closely there is a long thin scratch (thank god it's still black and not white like some other scratches on the car). Looks like a long swirl line. Will Z5 hide this or will I need to have it buffed out?
