how to tackle these scratches?

i've used the PC several times now. my car used to be a city car and i'm sure the previous owners never washed it. the paint was pretty bad with bird droppings etched into the paint and a bunch of swirl marks and scratches.

i can't seem to get rid of these scratches. i've used menzerna power gloss with ccs yellow pad, SIP with orange, and po106ff with white. when i touch it, the paint feels very smooth and you can't feel them at all. my fingernail does not get caught in it. am i using wrong technique or something? i can get rid of swirls on other parts of the car, just the driver side fender remains pretty bad. its single stage paint, no clearcoat.

If your fingernail doesn't get stuck, then its possible to remove. How long are you working it in? move very slow and work the compound in. You're using some pretty aggressive stuff, so it probably is the technique. I'd say move up to a rotary or wetsand for faster results.

i probably spend 4-5 minutes on a section i do and go over the area a minimum of 4 times. i'll try some 4 inch pads in the morning.

This might be a classic example of where a rotary is best. A defect that could take a PC 10 minutes to correct could easily be done with a few passes with a rotary in less than 1. I'd keep tying. You're bound to break through the scratches eventually.

I often spend a *LOT* longer than that, even when using a rotary! But I'd expect ss black to be fairly soft, so with the PC/4" you might be able to do it in about half an hour per panel.

I wouldn't bother switching to the milder combos until you have the major scratches taken care of. Replace the marring with the aggressive product's micromarring, *then* switch to milder stuff.

Heh heh, before somebody :nono me for how long I take with the rotary, yeah, I know, I oughta use wool for the serious correction ;)

X2...I probably spend around that much time with the rotary but with the PC it is much longer.

Remember to move very slow even with the 4" pads

listen to this guy!:waxing: a rotary even on the lowest speed will do more correction than a pc on speed 6.

well, i went over it with 4 inch pads going very slowly. it looks a lot better now, but i still have several horizontal scratches, but way better than before. i've been thinking of getting a rotary for the past few weeks, but probably going to wait until later in the summer.

when i got it over 2 years ago. some parts were already stolen when i bought it, but i've replaced them. its basically the same. really no mods except a recaro seat i've added.

if you search on mr2oc.com, you can find my 93T. look under norcal section for the sonics meet. i started the thread, under my username "turbo". its over a year ago i believe. i'm the only car with a 98+ spoiler. my car has changed a bit since then.

i also have humberto/eric lee's old 88SC plus another 95NA. The 88SC should be under the TORC 2007 pics in norcal. i'm the car with the 1/2 fiberglass/carbon fiber front lip.

slobu- Glad to hear the 4" pad made things better.
