How to remove scratches from plastic taillights

I recently purchased some taillights for my GTO. When I received them they were covered in a large amount of small scratches and swirls. I spent about an hour on one using a 4" white spot pad and my zaino plastic cleaner. While this did make it look better, it really did not achieve the results I wanted.

My question is what about wetsanding?

Has anyone ever wetsanded plastic taillights with success? I have some meguiars unigrit sandpaper in 2000 and 3000 grit I believe. Is it going to cause more damage than it is worth?

Any input would be great.

Excellent write up there. I'd probably finish with ultra gloss paint and plastic polish and then seal. Can't wait to try wet sanding them.

Tonight I tackled the project of wetsanding them. Took about 3 hours from start to finish doing the lights on the kitchen table.

I started with meguiars unigrit 2500 and then went to 3000.

I used sonus sfx2 on the crappy pad that comes with the pc to get rid of the hazing.

I then used zaino plastic polish on a white autopia spot pad to finish them off.

They look 10000000x better than before, and I would say are 99% perfect at this point.

Very glad I attempted it. I like wetsanding plastic much better than wetsanding paint :)

I took a few pics today when I got home.

They look good under indoor lighting, camera flash, and 1000 watt halogen watt bulb in the garage, but I have yet to see them under sunlight. I will put them on the car in the next few days I guess and determine if I like them or not.
