Is there a technique or leather conditioner to prevent leather seats from looking greasy/glossy/slipery? I hate the greasy/glossy/slipery look that I refuse ro put anything on the dash and door panels, just wipe them clean no protectant, but I worry if I dont use leather conditioner on the leather that it will carack and dry out??

How to condition the leather “finishes” for appearance” and rejuvenates the leather “structure for suppleness”.

I believe you are looking for leather products to condition both the “finish” and the “structure”.

Then we should be looking at conditioner/protector for the finish and rejuvenator for the structure.

Greasy/glossy/slippery looking appearance conditioners are primarily used for the tires; a wrong choice for leather seats to be sat on. Fine leather finish conditioners gives a range of satin, dull to matte looking appearance; besides the look it impart a choice of “buttery, draggy, silky or waxy” tactile-feel; to reduce friction wear to the leather finish; to impart a non-stick property that retards sticky soiling including the accidental ballpoint ink and the common dye transfer from leather belt and the new blue jean; it should also leave a pleasant leather scent that charms for the “scent of leather is more leathery than the leather itself”; a satisfactory smile of approval is a common experience on the first encounter.

Besides the finish conditioner that fulfill our senses to enjoy the luxury of leather; it’s the rejuvenator that has to satisfy its purpose of practical usage; characteristically softness, strength and suppleness that allows “compressibility, stretchability and flexibility” to carry our weight when we sit on; all the physical stress of leather structure depends on the fatliquor (fat, oil and water) that make it possible with suppleness; this fatliquor the “lifeblood of leather” will eventually dry out as VOC (volatile organic compound) and when the leather is flex it will crack; requires periodic replenishing.

Hope you find the right stuff soon!

My customer, who likes to experiment with me on diff DIY products and techniques always use this method on his Audi A4.

1. 2caps of your favourite leather conditioner (eg: Meguiars).

2. Mix it with 2 coffee mugs of water.

3. Mix the solution thoroughly.

4. Soak a clean sponger into this solution. Squeeze out excess. Wipe this sponge all over the seat.

Allow it to air-dry, and you shd have a nice, and evenly matte finish.

You can experiment with diff ratios (conditioner vs water).

This is an unorthodox method and as mentioned, it was just the result of experimentation. But hey...if it works....why not LOL !!!!

An alternative to have a durable matte finish to the leather interior is to strip off what’s put onto the original OEM finish that have distorted the appearance.

Thereafter apply a matte topcoat and maintain from there with just plain acidifying rinse (pH 3.0) that will neutralize alkaline exposure to its original chemistry integrity of the finish with a healthy squeak.

Products required would be:

Leather Prep > Cleaner > Rinse > Matte Topcoat.

My leather has a nice matte finish its new How do I find out what kind of leather it is treated etc.?? I like the dash and door paannel look I plan on putting no dressing and protectant on it just cleaning it but I wish I could do the same for the leather I like it just the way it is. If I dont put a protectant/condioner on it it will dry out and crack right?? What cuases leather to crack the sun and dirt?

I assume we are talking about pigmented leathers.

So technically it’s two layers – the finishes comprises of the colorcoat and the topcoat; the structure is protein fibers with other leather constituents and it’s the level of fatliquor that will determine whether the leather structure will crack or not.

Why do pigment cracks, is the plasticizer in the binder that holds the pigment give way when it is stretch, compress or flex – plasticizer do diminish as VOC (volatile organic compound) through excess heat, alcohol or alkaline cleaners; resulting in difference in elasticity between the structure grain surface.

The thickness of the leather structure cracks is due to the diminishing fatliquor (lifeblood of leathers); resulting in the fibrils being stick together stiff and when flexes cracks.

Micro cracks are supposed to develop on urethane finishes to allow for the leather to breath as typically found in Micro-pigmented / semi-aniline leathers.

Napa pigmented leathers is some luxury models uses Nitrocellulose as binders for the pigment color; thus forms “discontinuous” film that breaths easily and is more comfortable to seat; these discontinuous film develops quickly when the colorcoat is applied with the matching topcoat.

Leathers that breaths are the high-end type; versus leather that is overly protected is the low-end type closer to vinyl.

So it’s recommended not to over protect the finish that makes it suffocating to the leather structure that leads to cracking to the structure; it also makes rejuvenating the leather structure much more difficult.

You will see more and more leather perforated for this reason – the utility of the leather depends on this thickness of leather and the fatliquor needs to replenish on a regular basis to keep it soft, strong and supple.

Show us pictures of your leather type and condition and we can go further from there; to break away from this endless loop - “If I don’t apply conditioner/protector to my leather just clean it when its dirty would this be fine??...but I worry if I don’t use leather conditioner on the leather that it will crack and dry out??"
