How to? black etched stuff on wheels

This seems to be one of my biggest pains: backed on brake dust on the wheels - especially mesh style wheels (BMWs).

What methods for making these wheels look new again are effective? safe?

I've seen acid used with a tough brush - is that the only way?!

Any chemical/brush recommendations?

I might try rubbing real lightly with some #0000 steel wool, but be careful not to scrub through the clear coat.

I had that problem on the last BMW I did.
I used clay and got at least, 80% of it off.

Try the steel wool method like Shiny Lil Detlr said.

You can also go to autozone and get yourself some hot wheels cleaner from megs and a wheel brush.

Clay will also work.
