how safe are wheel cleaners?

Wheel cleaners such as "meguires hot rims" say that they shouldn't be left on the wheel for more than 15 seconds. This kind of scares me because it makes it seem like the product could be harmful if left on the wheel too long. The only reason i use it is because it is a huge PITA to clean the BMW performance package rims without first using a wheel cleaner. Will this stuff strip off klasse SG?
 
and some are not so safe (acidic). If you haven't yet, get a copy of last years Guru Reports Wheel and Tire Guide. It rates alot of the current wheel cleaners. After reading this report, I switched over to the Klasse Twins (later this year will try Zaino Z2-PRO) on my wheels for protection. But I also switched from wheel cleaners (P21S in my case) over to a 50/50 water/car-shampoo mix for my wheel cleaning, i.e. no more chemical wheel cleaners for me. They are too harsh for my tastes.
