How much to fix/correct this?

Hi,



I own a 2010 Nissan Rogue in wicked black. I started off all gung ho about keeping it detailed and clean, but I'm finding I dont have the time or knowledge to properly correct the paint. I wash by hand using lambswool mitt & 2 bucket method and it usually takes me about an hour and a half. I dry with waffle weave mf using DG Aquawax.

I have used Megs NXT, AG HD, and most recently FK1000P. The Rogue looks great from afar and I get compliments on it's shine all the time, but I notice lots of swirling. Not from 6 ft away, but from about 3 ft or closer The gf says I'm nuts and no one else would notice that, but I do and it bugs me.

I tried some KAIO and then Megs Swirl X on a small spot last weekend by hand and there was no change. Swirls still there. Im afraid I dont know what I'm doing and will only make worse.

Id like to hire a detailer to correct these swirls for me.other than them, paint is in excellent condition. How much should something like this run? A friend told me he thought like $350 or $400....is this about right? I'm in the New Orleans area btw. What would you guys charge for this type of correction?

I would say 350 to 400 is a fair starting part - the hard part is that we have no pics, and certainly haven't inspected in person.





Before you decide to plunk the coin down to fix it its certainly worth your while to make sure your wash and drying routine is dialed in so you do no re-instill the same damage once you have your finish corrected



I would venture to say it MIGHT be your drying towel as they are highly variable in quality. We use and sell a ton of sheepskin so with us doing a lot of maintenance washes its probably not it as long asyour technique of pre-rinse and washing passes are on point.

I'll be honest, at this point I'm not above using some kind of filler or concealer for the time being before plunking down $400 in case I am causing the damage. Was hoping it wouldn't be that bad $$$ wise, but I know quality costs. Whats a good product to cover the swirls for the time being until I tell the gf she has to get my paint corrected for xmas :)

Its not always "hack"ish to use something to slightly lighten the appearance of swirlmarks - while I don't do it, its certainly completely appropriate if they drive you nuts but you don't have the money to paint for correction - or don't have the thickness(in older heavily polished vehicles) to correct it.



I would say the water magnet is your problem :). Do you find your self chasing water all over the place and wiping, wiping, wiping, wiping?
 
I use DG Aquawax when drying and I thought I was doing a good job. water doesn't go all over and I dont find myself wiping all over too much. It's very frustrating b/c I feel like I take more time and use better products than anyone else I know.

What products would you suggest for covering up/filing/masking the swirls until I can spend that much on a correction? Thanks again btw...i really appreciate the advice.
 
I think one of your best bets for OTC stuff(and really overall IMO) is probably AutoGlym Super Resin Polish which can be found at something like PepGirls it works really easy by hand and leaves a nice base for whatever you want to top with. In addition its paint cleaning action does a nice job for even a pre-wax paint cleaning.
 
I will pick up some AG Super Resin Polish this weekend. Do you think the Finish Kare 1000P would be a good topper? Or the AG HD wax? I loaned that to my dad, but ill go pick it up if you think that would be better. I like the FK 1000P b/c of it's durability and appearance and ease of use. Anything else might work better as a topper? I also have Megs NXT.

I think either would be fine. Probably due to your climate 1000P, but if you like the HD you can use that too. Whatever you like is my choice.

I'm a little ways away in Jackson, but would be happy to take a look for you! Shoot me a pm if you are interested. Certianly will not hit ya for 400+ on a paint correction just to take care of minor swirls. Keep in mind we aren't talking 100% correction either. Very hard to achieve on a black vehicle as a daily driver. If cover up is something you are interested in, try brilliant glaze by Adams. That's something I reccomend to my customer who show their daily drivers...... Allows you the owner to prep for a show without a polish or correction.
 
Picked up some of the AG Super Resin Polish at Pep Boys. Will probably use it tomorrow since the Saints game isn't until 3pm. I think pep boys is discontinuing this btw....it wasnt in the detail product section, but on an endcap with just 2 bottles of the polish and 3 hd waxes. Polish only rang up for $10.99....might go back and pick up the last 2 if I like it after tomorrow.



Once I've applied the ag polish is there a cure time or can I immediately top with 1000p?
 
Basically apply and work it over (couple updowns couple leftrights) and let haze, just swipe your finger over make sure it comes off easy, then you can remove it and top. That is probably the most common way when people use it as a cleanser, and I haven't heard any ill effects from it ever.
 
Also, if you have the time, a couple applications seem to enhance the swirl concealing properties of it. It's a bit of work by hand but its good stuff.



Stay away from textured plastics with :).
