how many times can you polish?

I have been lurking for a bit, found some good information over time. This is one I have not seen, though. How much polish can a paint job take over time before You might wear it down, or is that not possible. My '98 integra has been polished 3 or 4 times with smr 2.0, twice by hand, last time with PC and my 02 wrx twice with that. Is this causing too much wear on the paint, or is this sometihng I could do once a year? Are there better polishes for regular use? For instance, would I get better general results with #80 or another polish?

The other question, a coworker wants me to work on his 66 mustang convertible. He says there is a little oxidation. Has been exposed to the elements for a while. It has been repainted years ago, but with factory single stage paint (he said its factory paint, so I am guessing single stage). Should I use a polish like #9, or go with something else? I just used the klasse twins on my integra, and it went on really easy. Some say that AIO works well for oxidation, should I just use that? Also, is there a general cleaner and treatment for the top, or will car wash detergent do well?

Thanks for your advice.

do you really need to polish the cars that much? you will eventually wear down a finish if you use the wrong kind of polish often enough, but there shouldn't be too much trouble if you use clear-coat safe polishes

As for the mustang, there are special convertible top cleaners with sun and weather protectors, you should look into those.

I'll let someone else comment about the number of times you can polish... but for that other car,

I would suggest AIO for the oxidation. For the top, you can use the car wash soap and a very soft brush to clean it. Depending on how bad it is after that, there are other things you can do to clean and protect it. The most important thing would be to find out what it is made out of. Either vinyl of some sort or fabric. There are specific products for each type of top.

Hope this helps

It would take some serious effect to wear down your paint with a PC. The amount of paint which is removed by a normal polish is tiny. Generally this is not an area of concern.

As for what type of polish, it all depends on what the problem is

Yeah, as long as you're using mild, PC-appropriate polishes you're not gonna wear down the paint too much. I've polished some "keepers" many, many times by PC/Cyclo without causing any problems at all.

Using aggressive products and/or a rotary can be another matter. But if you need to polish aggressively very often, you oughta just rework your wash/dry regimen so you quit marring the finish so much.

The #80 isn't the mildest product in the world, so I wouldn't use that more than a few times a year if dealing with a "keeper". Haven't tried the SSR2 yet so I can't comment on it.

The AIO is good for oxidation, but the #9 wouldn't be a bad polish to try on the Mustang (nice and mild, maybe *too* mild).
