rjstaaf if you don't mind me asking, how much does it cost to have that test done.

I run Mobile 1 to about 5,000 miles.

Edit: Their website says a standard oil test is $22.50. Is that what you have done, the standard test? Thanks.

Sorry it took so long to reply but this is the first chance I have had to log back into Autopia since I posted to this thread.

Anyway, I got the standard test and the TBN. I generally buy extra sample kits and I think I still have 4 left which will last me another two years as I generally test my oil every 6 months. They seem to still honor the price on the slips in my older kits which is $20 for the test and $10 for the TBN. I would imagine though if you got a kit recently it probably has the higher prices on it.

Take this as a warning. I work at Valvoline Instant Oil Change and have learned quite abit about this topic. Dont always trust what the manual says or what the dealer says. When they recommend going 5000 miles between oil changes, they are saying that because they want u to use a full synthetic oil or at least a semi-synthetic blend. A conventional oil should be changed out every ~3000 miles. You can end up with warranty problems using conventional oil and going 5000 miles between changes. I know people who have been screwed by dealers this way.

Go spend a few hours on bobistheoilguy.com . Show me what car has an oil interval of less than 5000 miles under normal driving these days? Fact is many have over 10,000 miles. I've had oil analysis done at 10k miles and the oil was still fine for continued use. A dealer can and will say anything, however they will not write just anything down on paper. I'd be curious as to how many warranty issues you've seen written down on paper from the regional warranty rep for that mfg based on an oil change interval being too long.

The oil indicator in the Acura comes on about every 7,500 miles with mostly highway driving. That car gets M1 5W-20. It could probably go longer than the oil indicator says but I only end up changing it about every 9 months, so a $50 oil change is good insurance if I ever have to deal with the warranty on anything. The 91' Accord gets 3,000 mile oil changes because it is 17 years old and the oil in that car can get pretty dirty in 3,000 miles. That car gets regular old Valvoline 5W-30. All the cars only get Napa filters.

I typically go 5000-7500 on the Tahoe and 5000 on the Camaro - both use German Castrol 0w-30 and K&N filter.

I use Mobil 1 and a one of few different carefully selected filters; Wix, Mobil 1, and Purolator Pure One. I haven't done an oil analysis, but I'm currently changing at about 7000.

3000 miles and all mobil1 per factory specification... this LS2 can be a little sensitive so I stick to that routine. I had recently heard that Mobil switched formulations on the Mobil 1 stuff due to some court case involving castrol... so technically Mobil1 is now an 80% synthetic so I might be changing.

I go by the manual, which for my new car is 7500 miles or 6 months. No worries since I like to use a good syn oil

How do you know which Castrol is German? I've been wanting to try some because it seems to be a hit on BITOG, but I'm afraid to pick up the non-German one.

Oh yeah, when I had my Chevelle, I changed the oil and filter every 1500-2000 miles because the car saw regular bracket action every two weeks. When I switched from 3.08s to 4.11s, I broke a few compression rings in the engine because it would rpm so fast in first gear. Anyway, I traded my old engine and good heads for a short block with better rods, forged 11.1s, etc and when my friend tore down my old engine (had over 90,000 miles on it) the oil pan was clean enough to eat off of and the cylinders only needed a clean-up hone. :)

I have the GM oil life monitor and change the oil when it gets to 50%, which is about every 5,500 miles. I use to be a 3k mile or 3 month person but this car holds 7.5 quarts and I feel comfortable with the look, feel and smell of the oil at the 50% mark. I'm sure I could go further, but it was hard enough for me to get use going past 3,000 miles.

This is pure horse hockey. Mobil did sue Castrol years ago over Castrol's use of the term "Synthetic" in referring to an oil that at the time was not really a true synthetic but rather a hydro cracked conventional oil. Mobil lost the suit but they did not subsequently change their formula over it. Mobil 1 has been and continues to be a Group IV pure synthetic oil.

On the front of the bottle it says "European Formula," and on the back of the bottle it says "Made in Germany."

Very pleased with it so far.

7500-8000 miles or annually whichever comes first.

'04 Accord 2.4l L4 0W20 Mobil 1 API SL Honda Filtech filter

'03 Corolla 1.8l L4 5W30 Mobil 1 API SL Toyota filter

The oil stash is getting low so I'll soon be going to Mobil 1 API SM on both.

Every 5,000 or 6,000 on a 95 Mustang GT 130,000 drive it like you stole it miles ;)

using Motorcraft syn. blend 10w30 and MC FL1A filter. I need to do another sample but the last one I did showed me I possible fuel problem. They said is was probably stop and go but I checked it out myself. Come to find out I had a clogged fuel injector spraying directly at the spark plug. Found it, fixed it, and improved gas mileage all for $20 for a sample

I use Royal Purple 5w30 in my BMW 3 series and change it about every 10k or 6 months whichever comes first. The pan holds a ton of oil in accordance with BMW's philosophy of more oil in the pan for better cooling and slower breakdown of the product, according to them. I found an excellent, cheap source for Royal Purple with free shipping so that helps due to the cost of Royal Purple.
