As Dave said, focus on washing AND drying technique and you will minimize swirls and micromarring. That said though, it's impossible to wash something for, say, 1-2yrs and not have anything on the paint, but good products+technique will mean it will just be the odd marr here and there, and not the entire car that looks like somebody took a wire wheel to it.
How much polishing/compounding you can get out of it will vary from car to car, as well as product, machine, technique, and pads (e.g., I'd wager you can get dozens out of a no-pressure white+106 approach, but you ain't getting anywhere near that if you use an all-out pressure PFW+power gloss approach). My test mule - black 03 g35 - has been compounded&polished about 8-10times in the last 3yrs (harshest though has only been 3401+orange+SIP) and it's still going fine. When I strike through it's getting sold, but if you only do it once a year there's 10 right there and no strike through.
