How many clean inner rim for full Detail?

Hey, to go off of Joyrides thread how many detailers here actually clean the inside of the wheels for your most expensive package? (removing wheels or not) I personally do not remove the wheels except on my own car for safety reasons and insurance, but how many do with the wheels on and what tips do you have for cleaning the inside of the wheels ie, tools and brushes- And any pics of a spotless inner rim would be nice :biggrin:

I posted on that thread, here is what I do on most all cars, the lower profile cars with hardly in clearance I don't because you can't reach it.....I spray the inside part of the tire best I can with degreaser then use this elbow brush to clean...the rest I can get from the front end....On trucks I do a bit more with the pressure washers but those are easier to reach and can be seen at most angles.....I've never removed a wheel from a car for a detail I'm not really setup for it...I have had plenty of rims brought to new for polishing off the car.

I got one just like this at a local janitorial supply store they work like a charm for all kinds of stuff in the wells and engine area
 
I will if it a showcar detail. For just normal details I will reach back there with a brush and do the best I can, but for show cars I'll remove the wheels and do the wheel wells and suspension as well as cleaning out the inside of the wheel and seal it.

I sprayed the wheels' inside area of my wife's Bimmer last Friday with Eagle One All Wheel & Tire Cleaner, and then followed through with an old brush to work 8 months worth of brake dust and gunk off. I had to back the car up a little bit to finish off the areas I couldn't reach.

The next time I rotate her tires, I think I'll put a little bit more work into it, especially in the lugnut areas.

meguiars wheel brightener (acid) 3:1
agitate with meguiars spoke brush
meguars nxt wash with meguiars brushes
rinse

I haven't been cleaning the inside barrel of my wheels. But, I have decided to try using a brush that's meant for spoke wheels. This type of brush I am going to use is similar to the Meguiar's Gold Class Ultra-Safe Wheel Brush. It should allow me to get in an opening and at least agitate the area. Basically the same attack as Greg only the bush I have is some cheap thing that's made of a fuzzy sheepskin material. Hopefully it works.
 
I degrease them and reach with a spoke brush, but no, I don't clean.
I have this $499 special which does everything, but I doubt I'll have many takers. For that I do it. I'm also insured to do it.
 
Here's my rule...

If I can reach my hand and a wash-mitt through the area between the spokes, then I clean the backside of the rims.

If I can't get my hand in there, then I don't.

With this open spoke pattern, it makes it very easy to clean.

(P.S. - I've been known to pull the wheels off to get the back side, but only for car show details, and a lot of extra time on my hands!!!)

Why would insurance matter for detailing the inside of wheels?

I said this earlier and have been using toilet brushes for wheel cleaning about 3 years....I learned that from someone here...I get mine at a Janitorial supply place...I'm sure they have them all over the country....I found them to be higher quality and they have two kinds the regular and the elbow one that I posted a pic of earlier....Super time savers and do the job right!
 
I use the motorcycle detailing brush from Autogeek. I bend it in an L shape, stick it past the spokes, rotate so that the part that's bent is flat against the inside of the rim, scrub (gently, of course). This is for spoked rims, for wheels like the alloys on my taurus (designed to look exactly like a shiny set of steelies with caps) I don't bother unless it's a show detail, you'll never see it anyway. Maybe use some spray on rinse off stuff to get the big stuff off. If I'm sealing wheels everything (brakedust) comes off.
 
I use a spoke brush (Meguiar's or OXO) and do my best with it. I won't go crazy, but most customers do notice the difference.
