How is boar hair brush different than oxo synthetic?

I have two very dirty cars because I am a disgrace to autopia and haven't washed my cars in.. well, let's just say quite awhile. Young kids, busy job, yada yada yada, whatever my reasons, it hasn't been done. I want to get them all clean now so I can put some fresh coats of sealer on before the weather changes.

When they are so dirty I feel bad about washing them. I had used microfiber but since they don't rinse clean I feel like I'm just dragging the dirt around. I'm so careful to keep using a fresh area (of many many many microfiber rags) that it takes me forever to wash this way.

I recall Accumulator mentioning on this board that he likes to use a boar's hair brush when washing a very filthy car because it rinses clean very easily, so he isn't scrubbing the dirt around while washing.

My question is if there is a difference between boar's hair and these oxo brushes (like OXO Car Wash Brush) in as far as how well they rinse. Has anyone used them and can give me any comparison?

Thanks!

Do a search on two bucket wash and on foam guns.

I'm familiar with that method (spent too much time reading this forum a few years ago ;)), but it's not what I'm looking for at the moment.

At this point in my life I don't want to be a good autopian. I want to wash my cars infrequently and do the least damage I can at the time. I think that a brush is my best bet for this as far as I can tell. I search around some more and found the possible problem with synthetic brushes:

It sounds like the feathered tips can wear away and break off after a time, so you can be left with the stiff bristle at that point. I think this may be sufficient for me since I'm a cheapskate and an interim solution is fine. I may go ahead and pony up for a foam gun though. I've been on the fence for awhile and I think it may be worthwhile, especially since I don't intend to keep up on car cleanliness.

Thanks for the info!

That was a useless reply. He didn't ask about how to wash, or foam guns. He's asking about differences between two products.

Sorry ahains, I haven't used either but I'm curious about boar brushes as well. Hope you find your answer.

ahains- IME (never tried the OXO ones, so I'm just extrapolating...) most stuff rinses out/off of the synthetic bristles OK. Sometimes greasy stuff like tar sticks worse than it would with a BHB. In that case you just gotta stop and clean the [whatever] out of the bristles...seems to really stick to the flagged tips.

Just be aware that if *one* synthetic bristle loses its flagged tip you can have an instant scratch-machine- that bristle becomes a fairly thick piece of plastic that's rubbing against your paint. That's my big gripe against synthetic-bristle brushes (the synthetic wheel brush that did this *really* messed up a BBS wheel before I noticed what was going on). When the bristle tips are in OK condition they can be *VERY* soft and all is well..I just don't trust them to *stay* in OK condition.

haha, sorry, wasn't trying to talk to you like you were dumb or anything, beleive me I'm a noob with this stuff.

I just figured that if you were using a microfiber cloth instead of a wash mitt, maybe you werent familiar with the 2 bucket wash.

No offense taken. Being the aforementioned cheapskate, my microfiber clothes and microfiber mits are from costco. The mits have all of these chunky braided lengths that come off of it. Looks like the dog on the cover of the Odelay album from Beck :)

So I haven't used the other kind of microfiber mit, but in general I'm unhappy with how microfiber clings to dirt. Maybe the more plush variety is much better.

The reason I used microfiber cloth for washing when very dirty is because I was able to keep rotating the cloth to a fresh area every few inches of washing. The mit didn't have enough fresh area to go over the car with.

Thanks!

I can't tell you about the OXO brush but I use a Mequiars Body Brush on my black truck.

Mostly for the roof and lower body, also my side steps. I need the length to reach the center of the roof!!!! No marring so far and does a good job!

I do check the brush before washing and use lots and lots of suds. Also 2 bucket method.

It does seem to rinse out better than my wool mitt. Now I do NOT use it with ONR!!!!

Regarding the use of MF when washing-

My MF mitts are *much* thicker and more plush than most MF towels. I have a few of these mitts, and some are better than others (forget who sold me the good ones though...).

But yeah, MF can retain some kinds of dirt, so I only use MF mitts after an initial pass or two with the BHB and I get out a clean MF mitt if I think there's any chance that the old one is retaining dirt; I don't trust them to rinse clean.

I use an OXO brush to wash off the convertible top, but I use a BHB on the paint. The OXO brush is fairly soft, but not as soft as boar's hair. Further, the density of the OXO bristles and their shorter length causes me to worry that the OXO brush could trap and hold a piece of dirt. I don't have that worry with my BHB. Hope that helps.

Ohhhh.. to jack my own thread - looks like the pressure washer and foam canon is good for busy/lazy folks like myself (in addition to the true autopians). Being a cheapskate I'll probably pick up the Costco electric model today to try out. I'm too cheap to pay for very frequent touchless washes through the winter, but I would probably be up for doing my own at home for one of these. I could line up both cars and do them both to make it worth the effort to get the pressure sprayer out and everything. Looks like it will also work great for cases like the present where I have let the cars get very dirty and am afraid of the abrasiveness of washing them. Neato.

I checked out the youtube videos of the cheap ($15) karchar foam sprayer attachment and I think this would be sufficient for me. If I had gotten in on the group buy for the canon that fit the karchar I probably would have done that, but it's not clear to me where to buy one that fits the karchar in the U.S.

I am in the same boat. I have a krachar and can't seem to find anywhere in the US to buy an adapter for a foam canon. I am considering just spending the money and buying a whole new trigger and hose so I can put a foam canon on my krachar, but I don't know enough to know what parts I need to buy to do that.

Another thought - instead of the oxo feathered brush, anyone used the

"Soft Clean Wash Brush" karcher attachment (KARCHER USA

It's $11 from their site, so about the same price. Just thinking it might be a nice continual flush of soap water while using the brush, if it is indeed as gentle as the oxo.

Another picture here:

Costco - Kärcher Wash Brush Kit

And this description says it won't harm paint. Not that I necessarily trust their claim :)

Wouldn't want the rotating scrubber for my car, but I guess it would be fine for the deck or something.. maybe the house siding, I don't know.

I was originally looking at the $11 attachment as an adapter that could be hacked together to give a threaded end (cut off existing brush, thread in a metal threaded end with JB weld) to use a more typical foam canon. Probably a stupid idea since it would suck if the hacked connection broke and launched out at my car someday :-o

Doh! Called local costco and the only electric they have right now is a Karcher 1850psi for $229. I was hoping for like $100 or maybe $150, this is a bit steep for me. Maybe I'll just have to watch Craigslist awhile..

DO NOT USE THAT ON AUTOMOTIVE PAINT!!

I have at least two of them and I'd hesitate to use them on my snowblower ;) Not even a close decision...

Welp the lazy-gadgety-impulsive side of me gave way to the cheapskate side and I just returned home from Costco with a Karcher k5.85m 1850psi electric ($229.xx). I also just ordered the Karcher foaming sprayer thing. That probably won't ship out until Monday and snail mail from CT to WA will probably take about a week too?

I'll probably practice up by cleaning the driveway or something this weekend ;)

I have pressure wash my care before doing my two bucket wash. I really want to get a foam gun for the wash part, and have considered the karacher foaming attachment since I can't seem to find a good place to buy an adapter for a foam canon.

Please post and let us know how it works. I am interested in seeing (or hearing) the results.

Hi Chris,

I'll try to let you know after I use it. These are the vids I saw that lead me to the conclusion that it is probably worthwhile:

YouTube - Karcher Foam - Meguiars Hyperwash

that same guy has a few youtube vids of using one.

I assume he is using their attachment, the detergent bottle looks exactly the same in at least some of those vids.
