How hard is paint on new Jeep?

I am used to Honda and Subaru paint at the soft end of the spectrum and BMW, VW and Mercedes paint at the hard end of the spectrum. I also have an older (2005) Dodge truck with medium hard paint.

Can anyone tell me where on this spectrum the paint on a new Jeep Cherokee would fall (black metallic if it matters).

Thanks!

My '09 Grand Cherokee in Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Metallic is hard, but not as hard as Mercedes Black paint...

I have a 13 Ram 1500 (Black), paint would be medium hard. As stated above chrysler paints are usually on the harder side.

Test spot will tell you, nobody will be able to tell you for sure unless they are working on your vehicle. Goodluck!

Thanks guys! Sounds like it is similar to my 05 Dodge Ram paint - which is good from my point of view. That finish has held up amazingly!

My wife ordered the Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Metallic which I assume will be the same across the line.

Many thanks!

I agree. The clear on my 2012 Charger R/T is quite hard. Fortunately it does not swirl very easily!

That's the benefit of harder paint in my experience. While soft paint is easy to correct, you have to do it all the time and each time you correct, you are taking off paint!

Congrats on the new Grand Cherokee - I have the same color vehicle in an '09 version with 25k miles..

Just thinking out loud - if you really want to make this hard paint Really Hard and pretty much swirl-free for a few years, polish it to an even more beautiful level or at least get the junk off the top of the paint and fix anything that is not perfectly clear, wipe it down, and put some good Optimum Opti-Coat on it..

Im over 3 years on my 1 application, driven it about 12k miles since I did it, and its still perfectly clear, no swirls, no scratches, just beautifully clear Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl .. :)

Thanks, Dan. Actually, I am debating sealant or coating. I was thinking of sealant topped with Black Ice (I won Black Ice in a contest here). Then again, my gut tells me a coating will make my life easier in the long run. Especially so since it is my wife's car.

Decisions, decisions!
