How do you know when to step down when polishing

Hey guys I have a Q. Let's say that it's a badly swirled paint and I'm using a cutting pad and an aggressive product to get rid of them. How can I tell that I need to step down to a less aggressive combo for final polishing or I should continue to use a compound/aggressive combo?

I don't step down until I either have removed all the defects that I was trying to remove or give up trying, and decide that they just can't come out.

All of your paint correction will be done with the aggressive combo. Everything from there will be hard to see, but are definitely making the finish better with each pass.
