How do I know if I got the "Real Deal" Sheepskin Mitt

I bought the EXACT same mitt at Wal-Mart for $5 about 3 weeks ago. I also bought one nearly like it at Pep Boys for $7. The $7 one has the same cuff/pattern only slightly darker green than the $5 one. When wet, there is a big difference between the two. The $5 mitt will show "parts" in the fibers like a part in your hair. The $7 mitt is much more dense and shows way less "parts" and gives the visual appearance of having more "threads per inch".

I don't know if the price difference is because of the country the sheep came from or perhaps the area on the sheep's body, but there is a difference some people may need to be aware of. The thicker I use on the paint, the thinner one I use for wheels and other grimy areas. Just thought I would share my cheap sheepskin observations.

It might have more to do with the specific mitts you happen to have picked. They sell mitts for cheap at Wal-Mart up here too, and when they had a large bin full of them I noticed how they varied quite a bit in softness, density, etc. Some felt awesome while others were kinda "bad"....

Well, I was inspecting one of my new sheepskin mitts from Target today for any debris. I found about a 1/2 dozen small pieces of hay inbedded in the fur......... Seems pretty real to me!

I would gladly spend $16 for a sheepskin mitt and I will tell you why. I purchased in 2003 a $16 from Nick at Detailer's Paradise. It was super soft, high quality construction and put up with a full year's of abuse from me.

$16 gets you better construction and softer yet more durable pile. The mitts I have bought since from Target, WalMart, and Autopia (the only bad experience for me there) have been complete disappointments. I have another order into Nick.

Lower cost mitts last less, tend to flake off bits and pieces over time, have a pile that is too deep to clean well, and do not dry out as fast.

Careful, rather be consious of all three your buying. Often times you will get pelts in the mix that are extremely light, and wont last but 6-8 washes before a hole develops.....

Might be luck of the draw, I still have one of my first sheepskin mitts from Wal Mart, over a year old, and although for wheel use only now, it's nowhere near falling apart :nixweiss

It is hard to use Bill's rule of "picking the best like picking fruit" when doing mail order, but Nick has not let me down. I have not tried yours yet though Patrick...if it is as good as the towels I got from you recently....:)

Does anyone have a problem with sheepskin sheading? I have used several different ones and they left fur all over the place. Went to MF mitts.

Teker, natural sheepskin, yes....Its the nature of the pelts.....Last time my hair got tugged on, i think i lost some hair too ! Its really just the nature of any animal fur for that matter.......

Far less of a hassle and a mess than chenille lint in my experience

I agree with Chinelle mitt shedding. I was constantly getting white Strands all over my vehicle. When you wash them, look out you lose alot of nap too. I just recently started trying out sheepskin.

I always say, "Accept no sheep imitations".:xyxthumbs

I like the idea of this mitt. Even though I use a foam gun, I'd still add more car wash to the pocket and incorporate it with using the foam gun.

I sure wish they would ditch the synthetic and make it real sheepskin only though :(

I found the wool mits in Walmart and you guys are right, there are soft one and coarse ones. Anyway I tried it out and I'm surprised how different it is from the chennile. It does not want to get wet in the rinse bucket but it seems to do ok job. I gave the baby it's last wash of the year in the rain today. It is 50 degrees in NJ and at least its clean.

I just received a week ago my mitt from Patrick at ExcelDetail. This is a terrific mitt. Soft but durable in construction. Nick' DP mitts are good also but pricey at $16. I think Patricks is $5-6 before discounts. Great value.
