How about this eBay Paint Thickness Gauge?

That's $200 shipped. At that price you are crazy to not buy the Highline from Elcometer.

Highline II should be perfect. Elcometer is a higher-end brand that usually uses some nicer / more durable materials in their builds; not exactly what you're likely to need.

I'm about to pickup a Highline II, from what I've read from everyone else, it's the best way to go in the budget category.

Once you get it, I'm sure you'll agree that statement is pretty true.

It is a very nice tool, It is not needed all the time but is very nice when a serious correction is going be done. Its nice to know how much material is their and that is removed.

Aside from the obvious fact of us knowing how much material we're removing, it will also help in showing the customer how much as removed as well. I think this is just as good of a marketing device as a useful tool.

I feel this is a great tool for those who price shop also, because it shows you are serious about your work, so they shouldnt have a problem paying a detailers price.

Ive had mine for a little while now and it works flawlessly. I love mine and am glad i purchased it.

Mind you, there's little market for paint correction in my city, but for what it's worth, there are NO other shops within a 500 mile radius that have a PTG (at least as of 2 months ago when I phoned around and asked).

I have an old ETG-A that I guess is antiquated. Still fun to pull readings ,even though the mils is the total paint build, not the clear vs. the rest of the film.

Does this meter read separate layer thickness or just overall?

If you want to read separate layer thicknesses, you're going to lay out a couple grand on a PTG.... the vast majority only provide overall thickness measurements.

Thanks Charlie, makes the Highline II meter an easy decision then - assuming it's still the meter of course for the "cheap" seats.

Ive got the highline II and clients love it when I can tell them for sure if the paint is thick enough for correction.

on a side note, I am super glad I bought mine because on my new car, readings are anywhere from 55-90...stupid low on mazda with soft paint! I will for sure be correcting the paint and then coating this one!!!!
