hot rims is some ACIDIC stuff!

There is no cure!
wanted to try a new wheel cleaner before sealing the inside of the wheels and decided to go with meguiars HOT RIMS.

my car is a little over a month old but the inside if the wheels have not been protected and have accumalated soo much brake dust that it was impossible to remove. well with one spray pf hot rims and 15 seconds of dwelling, a simple rinse removed 97% of the grime. i was amazed. with some light and i mean light agitation (wearing gloves i hope) ud have a perfectly clean wheel awaiting a light polish before sealing.

my main question after all this is if its really an acid cleaner?

its smells acidic and really tears crap apart.

if so its good to know theres a good acid cleaner OTC.

You got it. According to the MSDS on Meguiars.com, it contains hydroxyacetic acid and oxalic acid.

good to know.

oh and it has a horrible odor not decribably that tends to float in the air for about 2 minutes. i took a whif of this stuff and it had me gagghing for about 15 seconds.

Very dangerous stuff to use on some rims. I avoid that stuff usually. Just becareful

When I worked at Autozone, this chick used that stuff on some brand new factory polished aluminum rims and it completely ruined them. I asked if perhaps the wheels weren't cool when she used it. She thought because of the name, she didn't have to wait for them to be cool. Then I asked if she read the directions. :rtfm

the residue and marks left on aluminum after a cleaner like this and even SIMPLE GREEN can easily be clean with a metal polish... i wouldnt clean alumin with anything other than soap and water.

my buddy had some of that in his garage one day. I smelt it and its a very weak acid smell. I bought 2 gallons of pure phosphoric acid today for breakdust, rust, waterspots on windows and more. Cost me 30 bucks. Its looks like a thick yellow silicone. I could dilute these two gallons and make probably 20. anyways the hot rims stuff is good enough for over the counter...

I used to think hot rims was pretty harsh...then i tried Meg's Wheel Brightener. Talk about a powerful cleaner, the brake dust literally melts off at 4:1. The smell is quite powerful too, makes hot rims seem like nothing.

True True. the story with my avitar is that I was squeezing a ring of polish around on the pad and then I looked down and it was smiling at me haha. So it wasnt an intentional smiley haha.

A place called APCO supply equipment its in lakeland florida toll free number is 18007496294. The guys name is tony. they mainly deal in janatoriol/industrial stuff. but he does have some detailing stuff. He is really hard to deal with. He knows probably more about pure chemicles then anyone on this board. Thus making him hard to deal with.

Here is an example If you ask him for a enzyme cleaner, he will tell you that you need to bring in what your trying to clean and that he will make something for you. And then he will tell you the whole story about how enzymes are created. He really goes on about how if used wrong that it can be dangerous.

You just have to tell him that you understand the risks and that your a detailer an you know how to use it in many ways. Then he finnaly asks you how much you need lol

Not sure if he ships or not but you should deffinatly give him a call about it.

The megs site is a good place. I've also found it locally at Ace Hardware, you might check there. If not you can always have your local Megs professional line supplier order you a gallon.

i used that stuff when i first got my 91 acura 6 years ago . after using it few times my clear coat started disappearing. use only if you realyl need to . and remeber to put some sealant

i tryed using wheel polish , some waxes , sealant, notthing really worked after few hours thay end up being faded. So i stoped using any wheel cleaners ony water and soap

can u use simple green on the tires and wheels?will it be bad for the wheels?will the clear coat come off them like some of you mention if it has acid in it?

simple green is supposed to be safe on all painted surfaces. or so it says. its bare aluminum metal that doesnt quite work. ive seen it used even on chrome (adams polishes training vids). i would however suggest to seal the wheels after use and follow the regimen with water/soap. once the wheels are sealed water and soap are just as effective.

now as for a regular cleaning of tires. it depends on what type of dressing u use weekly. if its waterbased ive noticed that water and soap leave it really clean and just as good as a cleaner. if u tend to swing towards the silicone, solventy dressings, then ud need to use a dregreaser /simple green. just spray directly over the tires. scrub. then follow the whole wheel and tire (again) with water/soap.

with sealing u're wheels and using waterbased dressing u can eliminate the money spent on wheel/tire cleaners by 75%
