ok I just got my front end repainted a couple of months ago and i just noticed massive amount of swirls. I wash my car weekly with gc and polish it with #80 and follow that with meg. tech wax. I dry off the car with microfibers brought from costco. Where is the swirls coming from, is if from the mircofiber? what can i use to remove it with out use of a pc?

I wonder if you're just dealing with the same marring over and over again. While the abrasives in #80 do work pretty well, that product does some filling too, as does the NXT.

To remove the marring, some people do well with Scratch-X. I'd go with 3M PI-III RC (05933) then PI-III MG (05937), and yes, you can use them by hand. Get all the marring (really) out and then try to *not* reintroduce it when you wash.

i think i got it figured out by looking around. At first I always apply 80 in a circular motion and then i found out it creates swirls so i changed it to back and forth side to side. But i think the true problem started because I still apply nxt in a cirular motion thus creating the swirls, but when done applying it the nxt covers it up. Does that sound right. I am thinking about investing in a pc because I want all this to be gone with ease and to not happen again. Anyone know where I can get a complete pad it for a good price. thanks for the help

Are you sure you removed the swirls completely before applying your LSP? The swirls are probably rotary induced and you'll need something more abrasive than the #80 to get it out.

When I got my car back from paint the hood had a lot of swirls and I got them out with two passes of #83/orange pad then #80/green pad.

Invest in a PC or go with Accumulator's suggestion.

The motion you use when applying the products shouldn't really matter. It's not like products only cause marring (swirls, etc.) if used in circular directions, or else the PC/Cyclo/rotary would always cause marring.

If the #80 were creating the swirls it would do it no matter how you applied it but you'd get different problems; in circles you'd get circular marring, straight back-and-forth you'd get straight line marring. And the NXT shouldn't cause any marring no matter what you do with it.

Be sure your applicators are soft enough that they won't mar the paint. Same with your MFs. I'm sorta out of touch with what pad kits are available, so I'll let somebody else recommend something. But if you get a PC I'd still go with the 3M products. I'd use the 05933 with a 4" pad and then follow up with the 05937 on a 6.5" pad. Then apply the NXT with another 6.5" pad.

ok, i am finnally getting a pc. What is 05937. Will #80 remove swirls and scratches. The swirls i have are light but there are a couple bad ones, should i use some other 3m polish for it. what do you use for oxidation?. and what speed would i use to apply this? Sorry for all the questions

The 05937 is the recently discontinued (but still commonly available) 3M PI-III Machine Glaze. It's a mild polish with no fillers.

Yeah, the #80 will remove marring but it also leaves a fair amount of oils/etc. on the finish that can *hide* some marring that didn't get removed. This marring will "come back" as the oils and your LSP go away.

For oxidation I generally use either AIO (mild cases) or whatever mild polish I'm using. Which is usually either the 05937 or 1Z Pro MP.

My general approach for marring the PI-III stuff I mentioned in my first reply. But note that some scratches are too deep to safely remove. Don't want to take off too much clear!
