Hood chips, best way to fix it?

It's pretty bad, some exposed paint, most chips are smaller than 1/4", it's just destroying the clean look of my car

buying used is the worst thing ever, especially when the owner before obviously didn't care

Due to the severity of the chipping, I'd say a repaint is in order. Depending on the color/vehicle style, the shop may need to blend color into both fenders for proper matching.

Post some pictures? One thought is that you could always try "DIY" chip repair and if you don't like it get a re-spray, rather than going for the repaint flat off.

If you do a really good job with touch up paint and smooth/polish well it might be OK and really cheap.

I lean towards David Fermani's opinion (no surprise there, I suppose). I always just let the chips accumulate until they really bug me and then I get the area reshot. I hardly ever try DIY touchups any more and I can't even remember the last time I tried it on the hood.

is that bad enough? I think I'm just going to give it a go and see what happens. I have some touch up paint. I guess at the most I have to get it repainted, not too much to lose here

I do have a little bit too much of that right now. Currently looking for a job, so I'm just waiting for some phone calls. I'm going to give it a shot. I've actually been at it for about 3 hours now and pretty happy with what's coming out. I put a heavy wet sand on it and brushed in some touch up paint, here's how it is now, still a couple more spots to fill in

after touch up paint, wet sanded, compounded and polished

from above. Still looking a little rough. Might go over it one more time and try to smooth it out

Heh heh, cool :xyxthumbs I'm always happy when somebody tries something and proves me wrong :D Glad you're happy with how it's turning out.

thanks, turning out pretty good for a temporary fix until I can get the money together for a real paint job. It's definitely more tolerable as those little white chips are fillled in. They are tough to see from 5+ feet or non-existant depending on the lighting

same picture as that one ???

Dang, you did a great job. I am glad you went w/ my suggestion instead - it makes no sense not to try a DIY first before letting a pro shop respray because regardless of how badly you screw up, the pro shop's cost is basically fixed. At worst, the DIY costs you some time and 5 bucks worth of paint.
