hood alway spots up - rain - s100

why is it that no matter what i do, my hood /always/ spots up after it rains?

i never see anyone else's hood spot up nearly as bad as mine, and i'm sure they don't put in nearly as much time as i do (read: they use an auto car wash).

last week i put on a fresh coat of s100 wax. it rained once when i was on the highway, start through end, and the water beaded beautifully, and when i got to my destitnation my car didn't look that dirty at all. hardly any spots.

i washed it 2 days ago. today it rained. when i got to my car at 4pm, it had stopped, and there was some beads, but much larger, i suspect because it stopped raining hours ago.

i got on the highway, expecting it to just roll right off. wrong! the large beads seemed to roll a little bit, but the slickness didn't seem to be there. even at 70 mph there was still some drops of water on the hood that wern't budging.

i got home, pulled into the garage, and its all dry, but now where these drops of water were its GRAY! and spotted. also there seems to be these silver shinny spots as well.

why oh why does rain do this to just me it seems?

i'm going away tommrow, so i'm going to have to leave the car (black) in the garage all dirty until i get back sunday!

First of all understand that BLACK cars need to be QD'd daily.:D:D:D

You haven't done anything wrong - - - - It's just the nature of black cars....

Rains spots don't even show up on my wifes silver car, but on my black car, it looks like it's been a month since it was washed.

Just keep a bottle of QD and a couple MF towels in the trunk at all times.

It just takes a few minutes to QD the entire car.

I knew, when I bought my black car, it would be HIGH MAINTENANCE.........but its worth it!!!!! :xyxthumbs

I understand its the nature of black cars, but its just mine that I detail myself, and its just the hood, not the rest of the car.

The two other black cars in my family, my wife's and son's which I do not touch and they take through the car wash (my choice, not theirs), the hoods on their cars don't act differently than the rest of the car.

with mine, the rest of the car looks fine, but i have these gray spots and silver spots, some of which are shiny and they are raised from the sruface, this is all just from today.

looking at their cars which are outside on the driveway right now, their cars look almost clean!

I just went and checked again, and it really bugs me.

Like I said eariler, it is just the hood that gets spotted after it rains.

Other cars in my family, all black, do not have a problem with just the hood spotting.

I checked the spots, they seem to be deposits of dirt almost. I was able to QD one of them off, but I don't want to do them all cause there are so many!

My question eariler was about the fact that I had just S100'd it less than 2 weeks ago, and it was in the garage for almost one week (not being driven at all). It was so slick that whole time, then I took it on a trip, and it rained once while on the highway, and it was still slick.

Then after that and I got home I washed it, and its not slick at all anymore. I didn't get a chance to see the beading really since it rained slighly while I was at work (and forced to park outside!) but when I got back there were some large beads, but nothing small.

When I got on the highway (60-70 MPH) the water started to flow off, but then it stopped, it wouldn't budge. It seems the piles/spots/dirt are where I could see the water just sitting on the hood.

This makes me mad, I'm sure when I was it on Sunday when I get back it will be fine, but why does it do this, when the cars with no wax, and just an automatic car wash every so often do not have these deposits of dirt/spots all over the hood!

this has not been my experience with my black car and S100. Slick even after a few weeks, arrive home with a dry car after a rain storm.

So I don't think it is a general problem with black and S100. If its just the hood, then it must be the paint or the surface prep on the hood. Was the hood completely cool?

What kind of car is it? The hood of my wife's bimmer is also very prone to water-spotting because the hood stays very warm for a long time after driving. This is in contrast to my Honda which doesn't seem to get nearly as hot and cools down much faster. I'm sure you know that water-spots on a warm surface is a very bad combo. I don't think you can blame this on P21S because I get the same thing regardless of what protectant I'm using....and my wife's car has worn just about every product mentioned here.

Whenever it rains, I always try to wipe down the hood after driving and I've taught my wife to do the same when I'm not around (she must have rolled her eyes a hundred times while I demonstrated it to her).

 What are you using to wash it?

Gold Class Car wash.

In response to the suggestion to wipe down after it rains, I would do that but I have a few concerns.

1) I wouldn't want to wipe down a dirty surface.

-I have tried to "blot" the water away rather than wipe sometimes

2) The hood was completly cool, it had been sitting for hours. I touched it with my hand, it was not warm, hot or anything, it was as cool as the rest of the car.

3) I do not have this problem with the fenders, which warm up just as much as the hood.

4) Sometimes I can't even wipe it down if I wanted to. If I'm stuck in traffic or in the car but can't get out, and its not raining anymore, there is no way to stop it.

Is there anything I can do to prevent spotting of the hood??? Or am I just doomed to this, black + water + heat = SOL.

How do you go about doing this Tony? Like Matthew I'd be worried about wiping down the car without the aid of something slippery like soap or QD.

I am with Intermezzo...I think it is because the heat of the engine bay is drying those waterspots before they can fly off. But that is just my guess.

Matthew,

Just an advise, DROP S100 and go for the Klasse Twins (AIO and SG).

My SUV is not black (It's Copper Orange) so I may not have the same difficulty that you are experiencing with water marks.

I now have 8 layers of SG and the more I add an SG layer the easier I get to contain my watermarks or none at all.

After a drizzle, i usually just let the rain drops dry on top of my paint surface which is usually not that much as it slides away from my Klasse SG surface.

Once dry (the rain drops), I use the California Car Duster to get rid of whatever dirt that is on top of my paint surface. Thereafter, I use Eagle One Wet, Wipe and Shine to QD my surface.

Rarely that I get to have any water spots on my paint surface or my SG surface. As such, I am encouraged to continue applying Klasse SG whenever time permits me (about twice a month).

The hood on my Explorer does the same thing. I think it is just the shape of the car. Water beads on the hood just fine, and the surface is really slick, but water does not run off as well, just due to the shape. If it rains while I am in the car, I find myself swerving back and forth to get the water off, which annoys the hell out of my girlfriend.
