Home distillation?

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about home distillation? Is it an economical option?

With all the threads about dust and pollen on recently washed cars, it got me thinking about pouring a gallon or two of distilled water over the car to wash the dust/pollen away and also using during ONR washes.

I guess the pros of pouring it over a dusty car is that it would be quick and wouldn't need to be dried (won't water spot)

and the cons would be that it might not completely remove all the dust, but if water can be home distilled for cheap it is certaintly a better option than waiting until the next wash.

Seems kind of straight forward to me, but maybe I'm overlooking the obvious.

Products and answers for your water treatment needs. is the cheapest i've found so far. they also have resin so you build something like the cr system (if you do don't use the mixed resin, the straight resin can be recharged the mixed can not). ro/di system aren't that efficient as you will typical have about 2-3 gallons of waste water for every gallon of ro/di water. ro/di water won't spot, but if there is dirt/dust in the water it will leave a spot. so i'm not sure that pouring a few gallons of water over the car will remove all the dust and leave no spots (worth a try). you could always use a qd or duster to remove the light dust (imagine the whole point of using ro/di water is not to have to touch the paint and risk marring).

If you don't completely clean the pollen, dust etc off the car you will still get spots. Your distilled water will hold/suspend the dirt particles then when the distilled water evaporates you will be left with a nice little dirt ring(s).

So, you can pour your distilled water then wipe down the car to ensure all dirt is scrubed off and cannot be suspended in the distilled water. Which begs the question - in that case why not just wash it? You're putting forth the same time & effort right? If using a high pressure washer and distilled water then the above won't apply since the washer will be blowing off all dirt particles.

it goes something like this Garden Hose Filters x2, then fill one with Color changing Cation DI resin 5 Pounds fill the other with Anion DI resin color changing (5) pound bag don't forget the Refillable cannister 10"-Clear to hold the resin. mount the two filters however you feel and enjoy spot free rinse. some resins are rechargeable i believe the two listed here can be recharged making it cost effective. if you don't have color changing resin you might consider a tds meter to help determine when the resin needs to be recharged or replaced.
