Have you ever used alcohol or a stronger solvent on your hands and had it dry them out? Turn your skin white and flaky? Does that happen when you wash dishes with Dawn? It doesn't to me. How is Dawn a degreaser? Because you can wash a greasy pot with it? My face and hair get oily if I don't wash them, but I don't consider face soap or shampoo to be a "degreaser", even if they do get me clean.

If your face and hair are as greasy as a pot, whatever shampoo you use, I would certainly consider it a degreaser. :chuckle:

Well, my pots aren't very greasy since I try to keep to a low-fat diet. It's clear from all the Dawn-phobia here that there are many fewer bachelors and guys who do dishes on here than I thought...

Idk if grease-fighting is the same as a De-greaser.. Fairly sure it is. :)
 
I give up. If you guys think hand dish washing fluid is a degreaser, fine. Just don't come around any industrial settings or auto shops and suggest that Dawn is a degreaser. I'd hate to see you guys around some 1,1,1, Freon 113, trichlor, perc, TSP, or other caustic alkaline cleaners, then you'd actually know what a degreaser is. Wait, here's a point of reference that some of you can understand, Eagle One All Wheel and Tire Cleaner, with an active ingredient of Sodium Metasilicate Pentahydrate, that's a caustic degreaser....one I sure wouldn't want to mix with hot water and stick my hands in to wash dishes.



EDIT: Maybe we can use this definition, if it doesn't defat the skin on your fingers, it's not real degreaser.

No kidding. All soap "degreases". Jeez. It is just a matter of degree. About the only difference I noticed from watching others (neighbor until I took him shopping, father-in-law) use dishwashing soap is that it it harder to rinse completely and can leave a film if not rinsed all the way.
 
I don't get it - why would anyone want to use Dawn on their car in the first place? What's the point of using Dawn vs regular car soap? My buddy used to use Dawn on his car, and it seemed like it took a lot more water, and time to rinse all the suds off when he washed his car with Dawn. What are the supposed benefits to using Dawn? I think the only "non automotive" product I use to clean my cars is Woolite (on the interior).

OK, I'll bite :o Though a) it's a waste of bandwidth and b) I've posted this at least six times on similar threads....



I use Dawn for the intial wash of some vehicles (e.g., rentals and service loaners) that I don't really care about that are gonna get a full correction anyhow. It's a strong cleaner that's dirt cheap and that I always have on hand. Only downside I've *ever* experienced is the lack of lubricity and if a vehicle's already been washed with a broom I won't worry about instilling a little more marring before I compound it.



Yeah, on my vehicles I use Griot's Car Wash (pricey stuff). If I need real LSP stripping I'll use AutoInt's "A" (also kinda pricey). But on the vehicles described above, why use something expensive that I'll have to mailorder? Easy to just grab the bottle of Dawn from under the kitchen sink.



I don't care what a given product's original application was; I use detailing products for non-automotive purposes too.



But hey, if somebody doesn't want to do something along those lines, that's cool with me.
 
I have used degreasers on some paints and it will deep clean paints if used correctly. You must make sure you are out of the sun and the caris cool. Make sure the panel is wet before you spray it on the paint and you will have no issues at all.



For degreasing paint I love Megs Safe degreaser. It does a great job and has tons of lube in it. I also like Pinkstuf. When doing this process it will deep clean the paint and make it much easier to clay and polish and your pads will not get dirty at all, which means you will not be forcing a dirty pad all over the paint and causing more damage.



If you want to play it safe, then add a splash into your soap bucket to give it some strength. I have used Purple power on paint in the past on older white cars and it worked good and did no damage at all.
 
Maybe they ran out of spray bottles and rinsed out the purple power before using something else in it.



Of course I'm not sure what they're getting at by hosing down the interior.
