Hmmm..Prestone QS = OCW?

JellyBean, one of my bottles was marked $2.90 and the other was $2.60 but they rang up at my Pep Boys at half the sticker ($1.30 and #1.45). They didn't give you the additional 50%?

The bottles that Clearkote and Poorboy's come in appear to be the same yet the product forumulations are completely difference.

All Optimum products are patented or patent pending. I've talked to the owner, Dave, personally and he seems to be a straight up guy. He also is very protective of his ingredients and goes through the patent process on his wax and polish formulas to make sure no one can directly copy his work legally.

I just went out and cleared a section of OCW on my vehicle with some strong Dawn solution and applied the Quick Shine. Looks exactly the same.

Not exactly a scientific test, but he compared them. I personally believe that OCW is probably different in some way from the QS and that they probably were packaged using the same bottles from the same distrubutor or something. I would be nice to get it for $3, though. :)

Unfortunately, they didn't. The lady said that the $2.60 WAS the clearance price. I still think it's a bargain, though.

Not to bust everyone's bubble, but on the back of the Prestone QS, it specifically states not to use on glass. Doesn't seem like it's the same stuff then. I bought 2 packages (it was $2.90 for the spray with free liquid wax [what's that stuff?]).

I saw that too, so I tried it on the minivan's side windows. It left them very, very slick, with no hazing or streaking whatsoever. If this stuff will do likewise for the paint, then it's a bargain even if it isn't OCW. And by the way, I've never tried OCW, so I can't compare the two products.

Can he provide patent numbers? I'm not doubting, don't use either, but am interested in this thread. I don't think there are too many patents in the detailing world (clay, 303, and Vinylex are the only I can think of), so that seemed interesting. :)

Optimum Car Wax (patents 6669763 & 6685765)

A point that is missing from this discussion is that this Prestone product is marketed as a Quick Detailer whereas OCW is not (it marketed as a wax)

I know alot of people use OCW as a QD but I too have had many conversations w/Dave over at Optimum and they do not reccommend using the product as such.

What I really want to know is how SunX became OCW or why did I order OCW and get SunX. I'll email Dave and ask meself.

I personally wouldn't use OCW on glass either. I used it once on glass and nothing but streaks came.

I'm not arguing Scott, but isn't it also possible that Optimum relabled his product for Prestone? He would then be selling his patented product to them, and not sharing what his ingredients are with anyone.

Markthom stated there were more similarities than just the packaging, such as the scent, etc. I'm not saying he's right, and I'm agreeing that similar packaging is inconclusive (to the point of by itself being insignificant), I'm just saying that it's possible that Optimum made the stuff for Prestone, just as they may have made "SunX".

I wasted a bunch of time today trying to hunt some of this stuff down (prolly would have been cheaper to buy some OCW!), and since it seems to have been discontinued (can't find it on the Prestone website), I'm thinking the place to find it is a small auto parts store, since any of the chains would have cleared it out.

There are a couple PepBoys around where I live, so I will check all 3 when I go out this week. If I find more than a couple bottles, I will buy extras in case anyone wants to buy them from me (at the sale price + shipping).
