There is some point where we all have to say "no way" to a detail, I as of yet have not found it, but this one was as close as they come.

The veh.

Buick Delta 88
Year
19??
Paint condition
Poor, did not notice it was a repaint in till 1/3 of the way in to the job. lesson learned.
Temp/condition
mid to low 80's humidity 50-60% a nice day.....to nice to be detailing
products and process
wash - Dawn w/ bleach
Clay - No way (at this point in time it would be a waste)
Polish PB Pro-polish
Protectant X1
EX-P
Protectant X2
Natty's Blue w/ Spray and Gloss removal (spit shine method)
Pad
Meg's Finishing pad (not the best choice but it's all I had)
Equipment
Maketa 9227-c Polishing.
PC 7335- Duel action finishing
looking at the photo be advised it looks a lot better than it really is. This is one of those that Sean would tell them to go to the nearest car wash....lol ....and if I did not need the experience I should of done the same.
Before wash
Here is an illusion that even a bad finish will reflected in the right environment.
This was taken standing in the shade looking out in to the light.
you can see the finish in the light and how bad it is.(trunk lid)
Picture062.jpg

almost looking at the same angle but on the Roof.
Picture061.jpg

same as the other 2 but on the hood
Picture060.jpg

this photo was taken opposite of photo 61, you can see how the scratches all but despaired and the dirt showed up.
Picture059.jpg

After stripping/wash
The white spots are....well I kinda' got a head of my self...there splatter from working the dr.side of the hood, but you can see how bad the whole car is and the camera/photo is hiding a lot. the photo is showing more shine that is really there.
Picture063.jpg

After Pro-P
these next 2 photos got me shook up that is not a scratch, as I thought it was......its a vapor trail from a jet air liner (sheeeew)
Picture064.jpg

as you can see the reflection was so strong from the sun it was messing with the images in the camera but there are still scratches in the finish.....worked Pro-p a little longer and lot slower.
Picture066.jpg

this is where you can see the con. trail going behind the roof line.

EX-P

Natty's Blue

excpt for the spots that I needed to wipe off the front bumper.

Great job! Those swirls dissapeared! Any particular reason you use Dawn VS a traditionol "car" wash soap?

Mike

I realy need to strip tree sap and gunk that was on there for years...I know i was giong to do a full detail so using a harsh soap like dawn would be no problem....form this point on the owner will use a mild car wash soap.

Rich

I'm curious as to why you thought you should have turned away this detail. It really didn't seem that bad.

Whoa Rich!

That looks pretty damn close to the trunklid we jumped on. What a transformation though!!! Thanks for noting everything step by step :).

Indeed, quite a nice job Rich! :bigups

I agree. You seem pretty proficient with a rotary and you also had the privilege of having a master, who is mentioned in the title of this thread, show you some stuff in person.

Let this detail be one more notch in your confidence belt!

I should re-phrase that. From your results, it didn't seem that bad. Didn't want to sound like I was busting on ya. :brick

Not at all

I know that the photo can HIDE a lot.
If you have ever taken a good shot of surface damage you will notice that all does not show up....yes my photos did look good but the damage was still there and it was as fi they cleaned the car with a scrub-pad.

If you look closely at the photos you will see that the car was repaired several times this can be seen from the sever "orange peel" i was so afraid of getting to aggressive with the rotary and messing with the blending that was done

Rich,
I think you did an amazing job on that sow's ear!!;)
And thank you for the nice writeup & pics :) :bigups to you!!!

Great job Rich, I'm sure the owner was beyond amazed.
I'm curious, why dawn w/ bleach. I would have thought that the bleach would have done more damage.

Hopefully now the owner will take proper care of the paint, now that it looks this way.
Once again beautiful job :bigups

Wow, Nice work Rich. How long did it take? It looks like Pro Polish did a nice job on the defects.

I think it's time to peel off the Meg's sticker on your truck and get a Poorboys decal!

Did you hide the wire brush the owner has been using for years to clean the gas grill and car?

Sean
The trunk lid had more over spray and pitting.

Jay There was a lots of mold in the trim moldings and weather strips. I though that a solution would be to use a all in one product instead of washing the car 3 times with 3 different products.

I did not really keep tabs on the time but it was around 9-11 hrs and 1 more hour to clean up.
The Pro-p did very well, I can't wait to get Me some Lake County Pads, I don't feel the Meg's pad do so well with the Pro-p.
"I think it's time to peel off the Meg's sticker on your truck and get a Poor boy's decal!" :rofl LMAO you and holland_patrick......That was funny...to Funny, I:dunno how I'm going to do it but I'm going to get you both... :duel I think I just got :owned
Steve Thanks.....But for now save the sticker....way to many people are driving way to close to me just to read what it says on my windows.....so they all may come off.

GregCavi, Bill D, norahcrv, Mikeyzr, GSRstilez, jaybs95, mgm2003 hope I did not leve anyone out......Ahhh Steve.
Thank You
All of your words of praise and encouragement go a long way for me and others to try and archive a higher level of detailing..
Again
Thanks.
Rich
