I'm swapping out my MR2's engine lid from my NA on to one of a Turbo tomorrow. There are a few bolts that I have to remove that are painted to match the color of the car.

How can I remove them without removing the paint from these bolts?

I also ask this because this summer I want to remove the doors and get the 11 years worth of grime and dirt out of the cervices where my hand and a towel can't reach and there are painted screws there also.

Thanks!

Go easy, and do it all by hand. That's pretty much all you can do...I don't think there's going to be much of a chance of not stripping off the paint though....it all depends on how tight they're torqued down.

I'll have to try that 1 size bigger with a MF in it.

How do bodyshops do it? I recall taking a car or 2 to a shop and I know they had to take off the bolts and they came back perfect!

How about a screw? I wanna take the gas cap off and clean it nice and good. . .same thing? Try a smaller sized screwdriver with a MF?

They make special sockets and tools with felt lining in them. Do a websearch and perhaps you can get some info on where to buy them.

If not tape them up and then work the socket or wrench over them.

Yeah I was just gonna say some masking tape or electrical tape (since I think it's a tad thicker) wrapped tightly around the bolts should protect them.

ah. . .tape. Good idea. I was gonna look for some of that blue 3m tape for use with the PC today at Home Depot, looks like I'll have to pick up some electrical tape also. . .

thanks!
