help !
Ok, here's what I do : I wash my car, rinse it, let it air dry, then break out the rotary, prime my Meg's finishing pad, so no area is dry--I prime it with compound of course . I smear the compound round with the rotary off. I then start buffing with 3M's machine glaze 5937, and keep the pad flat and also overlap each stroke by 50%, and buff it till it flashes. Then I take it in the sun, wash it and inspect for holograms, and although I've done all the above mentioned, I still get them everytime.

Does everyone here, wash the car after you're done buffing/polishing using a rotary and take it outside in the sunlight to look for holograms ? Or use a 50/50 water/alcohol mix as an alternative ? Of course I wipe it using quick detailer I don't see holograms, but it only hides them I guess. From up close they appear as very very fine and closely grouped scratches. I've tried rubbing them off with my finger but no can do, they stay there. I've tried changing pad and still no luck. I think 3M's 5937 leaves some very very fine marks, or perhaps it is the pad, and honestly I'd tend to think the pad is responsible for such scratches. They're not washmitt scratches as I'Ve learned the difference the hard way this summer .

I need help, as I can't see what it is im doing wrong......and I'd like to use the rotary only to make the finish perfect. The PC would cut it for me but I prefer to master the hardest--the rotary.

I'm not familiar with the 3M line, but you can turn the speed down and use a less agressive product with the rotary, and then go over the area again, with the PC. Maybe that will help with the holygrams?

Here's a pic of the hood of a black Toyota Highlander that I buffed with a rotary. I used the Menzerna IP with a cutting pad at 1500, followed by the IP and a finishing pad at 1000, and then finished up with the FP at 5 with the PC.

Ever since I heard Mike Phillips sometimes gets holograms and finishes with a PC, I've decided that's the way to go. By the time you use the rotary only to make it perfect, you could have finished with the PC and be :drunk instead.
I rotary, finish with the PC, then inspect and if needed use the PC again.

I think those who claim to get the finnish perfect with the rotary, don't wash it and take it out after they re done with the rotary, at least for the most part.

Some are prolly able to get it 98% perfect wit the rotary alone.

I can tend to agree with you that getting a car back to 100% swirl free is impossible in some cases. Again what I said on your other thread about this is. Do the hood from start to finish and see what that looks like. I do the following on my black car and the finish is great! 100% swirl free no, however I get commnets on it all the time. I have not had to use a rotary because I've kept it up from new. Good luck you will have to learn to live with some swirls

i do my truck with the rotary .. i used a edge 2000 white pad for the p.c. on my rotary which also has the 2000 adaptor with a finish wax .. P&S PAR -K WAX . its for show cars and i kept the speed low and i think the small pad on the rotary made a big difference i could control it better on corners and tight spots .. ive done it with the larger pads on my rotary and i got some swirls ..

I think it's the Megs. pads. I never liked them. Lake country IMO has the best rotary pads. Try using there 6" finishing pad.

Chip,

That statement is probably somewhat true. Depending on the paint, products, pads, and techniques, you may be left with some very, very, very fine polishing marks that may require a good final polish to completely remove. Try a great final polish like Menzerna FP II, or Meguiar's #81 with your PC and a finishing pad.

Good luck.

EDIT: I see Gary has given you similar suggestions.

You might also try Poorboys SSR 1 on polishing pad with the PC to remove the holograms.
Some products just don't seem to work well with the foam pads and a rotary. I have had some of the best luck achieving a swirl free finish with Meguiars Polishing pads on the rotary using Meguiars #82 Swirl Free Polish and if you want more of a wet look follow up with their #3 Machine Glaze.
Just my opinion.
