Help with SSR 2.5 and SSR 1

Hey all,

First post, usually I just read the answers to other's questions... :hide: but now have a few of my own. I tried to call the folks at Poorboys, but they're already snuck out for the weekend. Any help with the questions below would be greatly appreciated.

I have a one year old Honda S2000 in Berlina Black. I have attempted on previous polish job in April using the Sonus SFX kit. I’m using a PC and I believe my technique must be flawed as I left very faint holograms. They are not terribly obvious and can only be seen in certain sun lights, but bothersome no less. The car is garaged and only washed by hand by me, so the swirls are minor. I think the only swirls I have are because I was not drying correctly before (cotton instead of waffle weave).

My questions are these-

1) The only pads I have are my SFX pads. Would I use the SSR 2.5 with SFX-2? And am I alright using the SSR 1 with the SFX-3 pad?

2) Also, I’ve read where it is mentioned not to prep the pad for SSR products. I was always told to give a few shots of QD to the pad before polishing. Is this not applicable for these products?

3) Lastly, I believe some of my hologram/marring could be because I polished in the sun…on a warm day. I have a garage, but it is not very well lit and I’m not completely confident that I’ll be able to aptly judge the breakdown of the chemicals- PB products advertise that they can be used in the sun- how accurate is this? I’m in San Diego and its supposed to be 88 degrees on Saturday. Will this have an adverse effect?

Thanks in advance- Chris

One more question- If I decide that the SSR 2.5 is more of an abrasive that I want to use, could I use the SSR1 with the SFX-2 pad? Then go over witht he SFX-3 for gloss?

Again thanks for any help that can be offered! :hifive:

Welcome SDCJ, first how is your polishing technique? When polishing you should move the PC slowly with some pressure in back and forth and up and down paterns in a 2 x 2 foot area. You do not want to move too quickly as this could cause some of the problems you are having. I have not used SFX pads but SSR 2.5 can be used with any pad except the finishing pad. Try SSR 2.5 with SFX2 pad and see how it looks because it generally finishes out very nicely. You may need to follow with SSR 1 with SFX 3 if the paint softer. Just make sure you don't move too quickly with the PC. I use SSR polishes all the time, their easy to use with great results. You do not need to prime the pad but you can if you like.

I use the same technique that David describes in his tutorial on this site, however my mistake might have been trying to do too much of the car at one time.

Can SSR 1 be used with the SFX-3 pad, which I think is a finishing pad?

Thanks for the help!

I haven't gone and done any SFX pad research, so I will be using general language in reference to the pads.

You can work the SSR's in the sun with no problem. However, you need to restric yourself to small areas. I.E., 1/4 section of the hood at a time.

Try moving the PC at a rate of around 1" per second. Speeds 5 and 6 will work well. Remember that the products will break down finer and faster on speed 6. I have found that using a polishing or finishing pad with SSR 1 works well on dark colors. Assuming that you only have ultra light micromarring, I would not use anything above the SSR 1. It should do the job with no problem. If you don't get the finish you want using SSR1/polishing pad, then drop to your next lesser-aggressive pad.

Drying with WW towels aids a LOT when it comes to not acquiring random little swirls.

Prepping the pads with a qd or water mist for the first time is ok, but only a slight amount is necessary. Generally, apply a small amount of product to the dry pad, slowly work it in (speed 2-3) then apply more product and keep going. That should be sufficient, as the SSR's work best dry and more misting will cause them to dry/clump/dust.

Good luck.
