Help with MX5 correction and m205

I'm still a relative beginner but have had good success with keeping my 93 Saab 900 and my 08 Honda Fit in great shape thanks to the tips on this board. My current challenge is my youngest brother's new Mazda MX-5. He finally brought it over for a detail this weekend and we got everything looking great with one exception - I haven't had a lot of luck getting the swirls out of his paint. I tried M205 with my PC and a 6" LC flat orange pad (one of the new hydrotech ones) and got some decent smoothing but about 1/2 of the swirls remain. I'm willing to go to M105 if necessary (and I have some of the older Meguiars polishes with cut between M105 and M205) but thought I'd ask for some advice before resorting to harsher stuff on a new car.



The other problem is a slight hologramming with the m205. It's weird hologramming in that it can't be seen when looking at the paint with the sun reflecting off the surface. It can be seen when the sun is shining over my shoulder. I can't tell if it's fine holograms or if it's the oils in the m205 having a prism effect off the paint surface. I tried to do some additional correction with m205 and a white LC flat pad but the slight hologramming could still be seen in just the right light. I didn't think to do an IPA afterwards to see if that would clear it up.



My brother couldn't see the hologramming and he was pleased with the way the rest of the detail went that we just finished up the sealant and interior detailing and he left happy. I'd like some recommendations on what's going on and how to get his paint swirl free next time we get together.



I might try m105 or one of the stronger polishes I already have along with a blue LC flat pad (I have the new hydrotech pads IIRC). I will also try the IPA after the M205 to see whether I have holograms or left over oil. What's the best way to remove the m205 from the paint surface once I'm done with the DA? We were using a good quality MF and some QD.

The hologramming could have been caused by M205 and Orange pad. You should use M105 w/Orange and follow with M205 w/White pad. I used this combo for the first time on a heavily swirled and marred Volvo and it came out 95% defect free and absolutely no hologramming.



Technique could also be helpful:

when using the M205 w/White pad, do 3-4 passes at a high speed with some pressure to remove light swirls/holograms. Then do 1-2 passes at low speed with little to no pressure to finish or burnish the pain a little more.



Or you could use Menzerna 85RD with a black pad to burnish.



and I'm sort of a newbie with machine polishing...:buffing:
 
Jbnery, he mentioned he was using a new Hydrotec orange pad, which IIRC is the ligher cut pad compared to the Cyan colored pad.



OP - Sorry not much help, but I have done a few mazda's with 205 and never had that problem. Let us know what find out.
 
Yeah, M105 on the orange followed by M205 on the white/black should work well. Sounds like you are getting micro marring to me. Holograms are from a rotary polisher, not a DA. ;)

Yeah, I could have used the wrong terms but these had the 3D look I've seen in some of the really bad rotary holograms. They didn't have the look of a buffer trail which follow the path of the machine. They appears pretty consistent over the whole area under correction.



Which ever it is, any suggestions on how to fix? I can try 3-4 passes with a white pad and the m205. RG
