My car was out in the rain last night, and then left out for the better part of the day today, in the sun, as well... It has GOD AWFUL water spots on the hood, trunk lid, and roof right now... I cleaned a small area with some QD and then used some 3m SMR, and they're STILL THERE!!!

Am i screwed? I've never experienced stains so bad like this from water/rain... Please advise me here...and the worst part is, is that it's raining right now and i can't even take it out to wash it and work on it properly...

A search is good, numerous threads about this. Its in the e-book also.

Wash the car and rinse.

Spray a 50/50 or full strength white distilled vinegar onto the car. remember to wear gloves and eye protection, also an apron works well to so you don't stain clothing.

Let the vinegar dwell for a few minutes. Then wipe it down. After you finish with this, wahs the car to neutralize the paint again.

Follow up with a sealant and/or wax, or a polish if you have scratches and swirls.

I posed this same question to Mequiars last nite. I had a friend ask me what these water spots were. It looked like acid rain spots to me. Tried all the tricks to no avail (polish, vinegar, P21s Finish Restorer with/wo 3M IHG). Meguiars suggested their Clear Coat Body Scrub (A-1016 sells for about $6). haven't been able to find any locally. You may want to try it before getting too aggressive with these spots. Let us know what happens. I will also post if I find and use the Body Scrub.

I'll second the Body Scrub as I've used it for a quite a while! It works nicely and I still have a bottle, but I haven't used any or needed any in quite a while. Other solutions might be a clay bar, abrasive polish like 3M SMR or Meguiar's Fine Cut Cleaner if they're really bad (to the point of etching).

Oh yeah, they're bad...:( I've gone at them now with a quick dawn wash, a coat or two of SMR and then some zymol cleaner wax (the only kind I have on hand...) They're not visible now except under VERY close inspection, but some of them are STILL THERE, damn it!!! Now I'll lose sleep over this, and then end up having to take the morning off tomorrow, just to work on this stuff. Ugh!

one more question... is it bad to apply SMR and then not follow it up with anything immediately???

What about a cleaner wax?
