Help Speeding Ticket

doubling the speed limit? chances are you'll get a big ol'fine and have to go to driving school for a weekend. best thing to do is be honest and don't act the whiny kid in court or with your family. good luck...oh yeah, be prepared to get slammed on your driver rating.

You could have asked to see the radar gun if you didn't believe his speed estimate. I don't think using anything against the officer is going to help you. You were going at least twice the speed limit. The judge is not going to have sympathy for you whether you were going 50mph or 70mph or anything in between.

And yes, it was probably a bad idea to hit the brakes when the car was gaining on you. He probably caught up to you and estimated your speed, and then added 10-20mph on top of that since you were braking.

Officers don't have to show you the radar unit. You can ask, and he/she may show you but they don't have to. As far as the officer estimating your speed.... He should be trained to estimate speeds within 5mph or so BUT he has to have a speed detection device to coinside with his estimated speed. No Officers testimony should hold up in court if he testifies that he estimated your speed at 70 so he wrote you for 70. If he testifies he visually estimated your speed to be 65,68, etc, and the radar displayed a speed of 70 then its tough to beat.

I don't know about Rhode Island laws and such but some states require an offical subpoena for calibration documents on the radar units. So getting a lawyer would be in your best interest so he can take care of that for you. Unless defendants can just ask for them the day of court.

couple days ago i was going 60 in a 50 and saw the lights gain up on me so i slowed down without braking. my radar wasnt going off so i knew he didn't have it on. by the time he turned it on i was at 50. he pulled me over anyway and told me he was going 60 and i was 'pulling on him'. racing a cop..wuhh? :LOLOL. he just gave me a warning and let me go. i figure because he had no proof otherwise/& was being nice. ive heard (rumor at least) that they have to provide the data from the radar gun in court for it to hold up. if u think he never got u on radar you could try that.
