I've started using distilled water for glass and as a first try for a lot of other stuff. It's nice because it's cheap, leaves no residue and the overspray is essentially harmless.

Back in 72 or so when I worked at an Exxon station we got something you mixed with water. 10% stuff, 90% water in the summer, 90% stuff, 10% water in freezing cold. I guess it was just alcohol and detergent but that and the blue paper glass towels that gas stations used to have worked great.

Isn't ClearView a Turtle Wax product, not AA?

Anyway, I've picked up a cheap bottle of Whiz Auto Glass Cleaner and works great... (I'm not sure if it's a US product, though, but it's an off the shelf grocery brand here)...

How will the test be conducted? On a new glass? Weathered? Post-polishing? etc?

Are you going to use MF, squeegy, etc?

Should products only available to the trade even be tested? I'm referring to Pro Products or E1 Pro Detail or any cleaner requiring a business account or contacting a distributor.

I'd add glass cleaners you can buy at Lowes/HD and the bed and bath stores. What's Billy Mays selling nowadays?

Has anyone seen some miracle glass cleaner sold on some infomercial? Those might be interesting additions if they exist.

That's a good question; with the wax test report, our pro-to-nonpro purchase ratio was about 1:100 - in other words, one pro bought a report for every 100 "non-pro detailer" people.

The glass cleaner test will be available only to those who've purchased a report - a sort of "thank you" for supporting us. Given those #'s and figures, we probably won't test too many pro products...

As far as polishes go, we're not going to test them, but we will make mention of them and take a peek into what makes them work and when to use them. I'm trying to keep this test smaller, as I don't want the production process to take months like the last one did. :)

Concerning application techniques, we'll follow mfg. directions EXACTLY - if they say to use a newspaper for best results, we'll do that. If they say to use a towel, etc., we'll do that as well.

How about a top speed wax test? We could find some rich guy to supply a Lamborghini, and we could make top speed runs with a different wax each time to see which wax gives the highest top speed. Since we would be returning the car well detailed, it will be a win-win situation all the way around. In fact, I am available for driving duties!

You know more Lamborghini owners than anybody else here!:p

I picked some foaming cleaner up at Wal-Mart once that works really well on grease and bugs and other tough window grime. But it is a bit streaky. I use it before SIG on tough grime since SIG has sucky cleaning power:

Gunk Ammonia Free Foaming Glass Cleaner.

I also still have this old bottle of glass cleaner I got a Trak Auto back in the day:

Black Magic Glass Wet.

I for one would be quite curious about the Meg's Detailer glass cleaner. I wish they had samples of that stuff as I don't want to buy a gallon of something that sucks...

Contact Rick Sullivan at Super Shine Detail Products, LLC (www.supershinedetail.com) I am sure he would like to be included. I use the stuff and it does a very good job at cutting interior grime ( smoke haze) and best of all safe for tinted windows ( no ammonia).:xyxthumbs

Thanks again for the info/tips.

I won't be testing all of the ones listed b/c as I mentioned earlier, we need to keep the test manageable. So, I guess we'll have to pick and choose based on availability.

Thanks!

geekysteve- Your wax test was great. On glass cleaners, I get good results with Zep #40 cold weather formula (aerosol). I realize you can't test EVERYTHING, but I'd even send you a can if that'd get it in the test. I'd really like to see how it does side-by-side with other products.

I would have to say Zep 40 and Disappering Windows are the best overall window cleaners.

I've tried all mentioned (except Gliptone And Einzett) and give the nod to Dissapering windows though because it doesn't dry up when you use it in the hot sun.

The Zep comes in a bigger can though and does about 30 cars. I think it's now sold at home depot with the rest of Zep's stuff.

Even the worst window cleaner works when followed up with a dry wiping from either 0000 grade steel wool or a microfiber towel.

I would rather have the worst cleaner followed with steel wool or microfiber than the best cleaner and only one towel.

Geeky, so the glass cleaner edition will be available to people who bought the report?

Also, I thought the next one was going to be on tire cleaners or dressings?

Pro, Autoint, Carbrite and Production you don't have to have a business account to purchase from. I know you can order right off Pro's and Autoint's Webpage.

If you are going to exclude products you have to mail order or contact a distributor, then you would be excluding a lot of products from testing. Zaino would be out. Pinnacle stuff would be out. Poorboy, Super Shine, American Shine, etc. are other products you can't purchase locally, you have to mail order. Or in Poorboy or American Shines you have to contact a distributor. Lots of 3M stuff you can't find locally. You have to find a distributor or order online. Eimann Fabrik would be out.

No no - you're missing the point. The point that bret is making (and that I verified) is that the pro market isn't interested in the Guru Reports stuff. They never were our target market -- as I mentioned earlier, we had about 1:100 ratio of pros-to-consumers.

So, in the interest of appeasing our market (previous Guru buyers, of which 99.99% are consumers), we have to decide just how many "pro" products are included in the test.

The next big test will be wheel & tire care, but as mentioned before, we have no $$$$ to do future tests. Magazine's are expensive to print.

Ahh, I see. The glass cleaner test is just like a little mini test.

How about include any products you can buy in resonable quantities? Lots of Professional stuff you have to buy in 5 gallon jugs. Pro's AGC-18 is in a small aerosol can that is the same size as lots of consumer products. Autoint's Glass cleaner is a quart and it is only $4. I'm sure some of the other companies make glass cleaners you can purchase in small quantities. They should be included then. If you have to get them in a 5 gallon bucket, then they should be excluded.

You also have to think a lot of PROs might not have bought the magazine because you didn't review the products they use.

Autoglym Glass Polish, can be used by hand or machine. Also worth looking at is Jaguar Screen Polish, sold at Jaguar dealerships - a damn good cleaner if slightly messy to use.

Anybody know what the BMW glass polish is like?

Steven

Don't miss One Grand Glass Cleaner...one of my favorites ( along with Sprayway).

Bill

BTW, congratulations on the "Wax Test"...I bought the issue, well done !
