Just gotta use the right clay, then nothing will go wrong if you do things correctly (which is very easy). Get some Mother's/Griot's or ClayMagic Blue, or the super-mild Sonus green Ultra-Fine and you oughta be fine.
I've had the same experience as NickelPlated.45. The current generation of Sonus gray *can* quite easily cause marring, even when used very gently/carefully. I marred my M3 with it and it's the *only* time I've ever marred paint with clay in over 15 years of frequent claying.
But don't just toss it out, it's good when you need something sorta aggressive. E.g., it works great on the back sides of wheels.
