The Rain-X product I hated was the one against fogging.

I hear you there. That FogX crap wasn't worth spit. If you think the smears and haze is bad on the outside of the windows then just double that and put it on the inside and you know what FogX does. It is hard to put on and it doesn't work. I even tried it on my bathroom mirror to see how it worked and it was nasty. Not one bit of difference. I was pretty disapointed.

In my opinion, yes the rain repellents are a waste of money (on windshield.)

I know these a fighting words, but a clean windshield is a happy windshield.

But on the side windows, they are a little bit useful, I prefer clay and then a coat or two of Klasse SG on the side windows though, but a little Rain-X on the side windows helps make seeing out of them easier when it rains hard.

Thats why windshield washing fluid and windshield wipers are there. A clean well maintained set of wipers (wiped down every other wash), and a clean window cleaned every other day on a daily driver not garaged is the way to go. Takes what, about 5-10 minutes to clean the windows that are well maintained inside and out, a damp MT followed by a buffing with a dry one works wonders.

Just my 2 cents,

Jason

I think the real benifit of things like RainX and Aquapel is when a truck passes you in a rain storm, instead of water sheeting across your windshield, it beads up and zips off. At any speed in a rain storm your wipers basicly just get in your way if you have RainX on. The water is just beading and rolling off. Way safer. My windows freeze at a lower temperature with RainX on too. I've noticed that when I get off work I typicly have less ice to scrape than any of the other cars in the parking lot. That is a good benifit right there. It helps in cleaning too. Bug splatters aren't as hard to clean off. Some bugs act like rain and just bead up and zip off. :) I've seen it happen.

RainX is good for more than keeping your windshield clean. Its not that hard to keep up on. It is the safety factor that I like. I've never had any problems with visibility since I started using RainX.

I have never had a problem with rain x . But now I use the rain X for the sides and back of the windows and just started using Aqupel on the windshield. One Aquapel will do both windshields on my cars. The AP is a bit more money then the rainx, so I'll see how that works and if the AP is worth the extra money.

High Noon: Please keep us posted on your experiences with Aquapel! I'd appreciate your take on the application and actual effectiveness of it.

You guys will be the first to know. We are coming up on the rainy season here in FL . Everyday it rains for about 15 min to 30 min. Then the sun comes out and its beautiful. Also my car is outside in the sun 24/7 so it will be a good test.

i'm surprised so many people have problems with rain-x. i've used it for 10 years now and have always been happy with it. the anti-fog stuff was awful, but the regular stuff is great for when you have to drive in the rain.

a couple months back i was driving from l.a. to san fran in a heavy rain and i had the wipers on for about 10 minutes of the whole 5 hour drive. it's much safer for me to just have the water stream right off the windshield than to have my wipers running. also, the wipers aren't scratching my windshield and i don't have to listen to the wipers and their motors making so much noise.

with rain-x on the outside and a good wipe with a mf and water on the inside and i can't even see the windshield on my car from the inside.

The problem I've had with rainx is that when I do need to turn the windshield wipers on, it smears like crazy! What application techniques are you using?

i use the recommended technique on the bottle. i use one towel to apply it and let dry to a haze. then i use a damp towel to remove and dry towel to follow up. but i'm thinking of trying the technique described on here of just putting it on before a wash and washing it off.

i don't get any streaking. my wiper just wipes the water up to its top position and the water streams off. plus, as i said, i don't actually use my wipers that often anymore. just when it's raining and i'm standing still or going slow enough that the wind isn't fast enough to blow the water off.

what kind of smearing are you getting? like the wiper blade isn't making contact across the whole blade? i get a very light trail of unevaporated water right after the blade. but that evaporates a second after the blade passes (like a plane's trail). is that the smearing everyone's talking about? i guess it never bothered me because i rarely use the wipers. when i do, there's not a setting on intermittent that's slow enough for me. so i'll just activate it myself when needed.

maybe it also affects different windshields in different ways. :nixweiss

I don't get that trailing water smudge from the wiper with Aquapel. Its the only product that I have used so far that doesn't do that. It actually enhances the wiper clarity!

i can't wait to see how long aquapel holds up. i'm all for something new as long as it's better. of course, rain-x only lasts through a few rainstorms anyway. but i'd love it if aquapel were just better across the board.

Aquapel on average will last around 3-4 months. It will last longer if you don't use the wipers much, or if it's garaged sometimes. :xyxthumbs

SL, do you remove the remaining Aquapel before reapplying or do you just clean and reapply? I love this stuff!

I polish it down and reapply. But, I suppose you could just clean it and reapply. I polish it down because I like to start with a nice clean base, but that's just me.

I'm glad you like Aquapel :xyxthumbs

I have not looked in a while, but Rain X used (still do?) make a glass cleaner which would remove Rain X.

Aquapel sounds great, but I have had no luck with a responce from this company to see if it can be purchased in the UK :(
