HELP - Detail demonstration

I have to demonstrate the basics of detailing soon; however, I'll be indoors. That means no car to detail, no water, no electrical stuff. I was thinking of showing some minor hand polishing techniques or something. My main problem is WHAT do I use in place of the car??? I was thinking of using a motorcycle helmet but I don't know if that would be similar enough to a car's surface.

I need something that shows a big difference between the before and the after. And I need something I can carry around with me. Any suggestions??

A front fender of a car, a side mirror...Either will do...you could split it up into 3 sections and polish one before going with your PC or Rotary to show the difference between hand polishing and machine.

What about a body colour moon-roof ? Some cars don't use the see-through kind. This'll be a nice small square panel which you could then break into two sides to see the 'before and after' effects.

Well I can't really carry around a front fender or detach a side view mirror so I'll need something else. =\ This is for a class, actually, so I don't have that much time. Just 5 minutes for the whole demonstration. Thanks tho. Any other ideas?

Well I dont think anyone here is recommending you detach your own parts. If you go to a junk yard you can pick these pieces up for a couple bucks.

Yup, or stop by a body shop and ask for a small dented panel they took off some car.

You have your hands full to do a show-and-tell of car detailing in 5 minutes.

yikes, I need to start refreshing the page more. haha thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Any thoughts on the helmet idea?

i would get a small panel or something from a body shop. prep it in two or three sections to show the difference between machine, hand, and no buffing. just use it as a prop and talk about the different processes for the 5 minutes.

"section A shows typical swirls and scratches. it is clean but not polished"

"section B has been done by hand. notice the improved shine and decreased swirls..."

"section C has been polished with a XXXXX buffer...crystal clear and swirl free..."

you get the idea. :)

I'm guessing this is for a speech class? For a five minute speech, I would focus on just one aspect (like polishing) and a single panel. Like someone said, a moonroof or something. A helmet just doesn't translate to a car for most people. Surely you could take a panel in before school and stash it in the room? I would do the work before hand and then explain the tools and how you did it in the speech.

BTW-I did skateboarding for a demo speech - and that's how school administrators figured out why all the brick benches had big chips in them. :)

Yes sir, you got it. I don't really have a lot of options here. I'm guessing my best choice would be a body colored moonroof panel as suggested. I should've thought more before I put down "How To Detail A Car" as my topic!

I was thinking maybe I can demonstrate the claybar part since I can get someone to do the sandwich bag test and they can be amazed. =D

Time to google up some junk yards in my area, huh? Thanks everyone! If anybody has any more ideas, let me know!
