Help! Consumer Report results on waxes!

If there was a Japanese wax on there, it would have won. :D

My opinion of consumer reports is that it's a bunch of people that know very little about alot of things...yet try to come across as experts.

They're fine for testing criteria that can be duplicated in a lab, but when you start using your opinion on items such as looks as a test criteria, it's bogus

I am a loyal Meguiars fan, there are loyal Mothers fans and even loyal Turtle Wax fans but I don't think ive met too many Black Magic fans.

... I'm sure that the reviewers were some Joe-shmos(sp?) who wash with a brush and buff the wax off with an old t-shirt.

:bow  No statement has ever summarized an Autopians view on the rest of the public so well!! hahaha

EDIT: btw, I lost all respect for that test when they recommend a product that induces any kind of marring. A wax is strictly a protectant and shouldn't need any cleaning power.

As for beading, I don't go for that method. I prefer the "squeak" test because something like Collinite will quit beading way before it fails the squeak test.

I must admit, i bought their wax test a few years ago. The one with Zaino and SG on top. It also had P21S in the top five? How does a wax rated just behind Z and SG go so far south?

I read that issue as well. I usually enjoy consumer reports, but I didn't buy what they were saying about the top waxes in their test..

Not trying to hijack this thread, but what do you guys feel about the test Guru reports did a few years back? I've heard they tested Meguiars#16 as a Cleaner Wax, when it's a pure wax. Also, some have said in their own person use/opinion that the M#16 was better than the higher rated P21S. Anyone else heard this as well?

I wonder if anyone has done any real world testing with Duragloss 601/105 against Zaino yet?

Interesting information regarding the credibility of Consumer Reports. I know it's only a few isolated cases, but these are only the ones listed as fighting back against CR.

I hate to say this but i think they are right about the Suzuki. The samurai was the most dangerious "SUV" of all time.

i hope i didnt give anyone the impression that I was suggesting that OTC products were bad . . . I use many myself . . .

But clearly Mirrorglaze products would be reached for long before turtle wax or black magic . . .

I'll be the standout here and say their report on Waxes was 100% spot on for the products they tested. Sure they mised a few good ones that are OTC. Consumer reports readers don't want a 3 step system. That want something to renew the look of their fading finish. They also want whatever it is to last so they don't have to mess with it again for a while. I've used BlackMagic on a pretty crappy finish, it worked great for what it is. It didn't do as well as say DG111, but comparing levels of shine for the average Joe is splitting hairs. They just want their car to look shiney.

A few years ago when I was all into lawn care and that kind of stuff - there was a good laugh at CR for saying they couldn't find the oil filler on a Lawnboy (hint for you mechanically challenged) it was a 2-stoke motor!

How can they downgrade P21S's rating because it has no cleaning power?

They can do it since it re-affirms their cluelessness :)

OTOH, what happened to NuFinish? Wasn't that the topic pick for years?

NuFinish - - the product for those "waxing" their car every other year...whether it needs it or not :bolt

That test was a complete joke.

This statement, unfortunately, essentially sums up the entire nature of Consumer Report in general

If I were all of you, the second I saw that it was a CR article, I would've tossed the mag and gone on my merry way. Then I would have visited a place where sane people who actually know at least the extreme basics of car care - a place like Autopia.

At the risk of sounding like a "no-good basher," CR's upper end consists of people who like to take the impartiality out of their reviews and change conclusions based on whether they like people or not. For example, people responsible for this didn't get their "way" with the entire Cingular - ATTWS merger, and ever since then Cingular has ranked lower in categories where they are obviously better.

I might be mistaken, but I think they even said T-Mobile had better network coverage than Cingular! :lol

So in essance, what you guys are saying is the average Joe should use Zaino, PB or one of the autopia favorites?

No, not in the least. I wrote something about this just a few posts ago. OTC is 100% okay, but the credibility of the study is so poor that it shouldn't even be taken seriously. Black magic is a God awful wax (I have a bottle in my garage with only one usage gone, before you say "don't knock it till you try it"), and any wax that can potentially scratch anything is terrible as well. Their criteria was also horrid, beading and "shine"...? Subjective ******** at its best. #26, NXT, Mother's original, TW platinum and megs GC are all good OTC waxes.

When you read the report on waxes you will sense that the people that wrote it dont beleive that waxing cars is nessesary, they think that its a waste of time. When people have to do something that they dont like to do and thats its unimportant they will slip shot.

Hope not. Next to washing the insides of wheels, mixing gas and 2-stroke oil is one of the most boring things evar!
