Help: CCS Pads Won't Stick To Backing Plate!

Well, this is really kind of odd. I've only really used these pads once or twice, and only on a few panels. After each use, they are put pad side down in a deep baking pan in a solution of Dawn Power Dissovler. Then, after about ten minutes, I rinse, then squeeze all the water out of the pad. They are then left near the furnace in a warm spot to dry.

They've worked great for me up to this point. So yesterday, I go and get the pads to do some work on my car. I place the pads as close to center as possible on the UDM, and start at speed 2 disperse the polish. Then I crank it up to 6, and things seem to going fine for a second. Then all of a sudden, it starts vibrating. I quickly see that the pad has shifted past the edge of the backing plate. Immediately I stop the machine.

I figured maybe it wasn't pressed on firmly enough. So I re-center and re-apply the pad. Same thing happens again, it just detaches the reattaches itself while its spinning.

I can't see the backing plate, or the velcro being worn out after just a couple of uses? Any ideas what could be the problem here?

Also, are the white pads supposed to be insanely soft? It seems like the damn pad it bunching up back over the backing plate. But if ease up on the pressure, it slings the pad off the machine?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Keep the pads away from any heat source to start with. Although Ive never been a big fan of the CCS pads, I wouldnt think LC changed the adhesion for the pads vs the standard ones. The glue is a chemical resistant adhesive. Does this happen on speed 5? I use to run the PC on 6 all the time, but rarely do I use the UDM at 6. Also make sure you have adequte pressure to maintain force on the pad at the surface level.

Its not sitting in a direct heat, just a warmer room. I found that if you just leave the pads in the kitchen or other room in the house, they take forever to dry. The furnace room however, by next day there is no dampness in the pads.

I don't think its an issue of the velcro backing leaving the pad, more of an issue of the velcro itself not sticking to the backing plate.

It will do it at speeds as low as 4, so I am at a loss as to whats causing it. It happens much more when the panel isn't completely flat, like a curve.

Have you tried any other pads on your UDM? Maybe you've created enough heat to partially melt the velcro on the backing plate.

Yep, if I give it too much weight, the pad stops spinning, and just orbits. But if I ease up too much, she justs skips to the edge of the plate.

Again, its not that the pad won`t stick to the plate at all, its that the velcro doesn`t seem to adhere to it strong enough. I remember when I first got the pads, you had to fight to pull the damn things off the backing plate. Now it seems I can peel them off with my pinky finger.

I had an issue with my first backing plate for my PC as a couple of my pads would no longer stick to the plate. What I did was go to Home Depot and bought some velcro with a sticky back and placed it on my backing plate. I also put some on a couple pads that seemed to also lose their ability to stick to the plate. Don't have a problem anymore with pads coming off.

I'm just wondering now if I should just get cut my losses with these pads and order a set of 5" CCS pads, or possibly the Edge 2000 ones?

I'm not sure if its the pad or the backing plate. I have a 5" backing plate I bought from chemicalguys that I'm using with CCS pads and after maybe 3 times use the pads won't stick to the backing plate very well. I have another 6" backing plate that I've never used and the pads stick to it very well.

I wonder if the "hooks" on the backing plate flattened out?

Old thread, I know. Just an update, I've switched to a DeWalt rotary recently, and the my LC pads stick incredibly well to the backing plate that came with it. So I'm guessing now that the UDM backing plate is the problem.

Anyone recommend a backing plate to replace the one on the UDM?

Thanks in advance :)

It isn't the BP.

I have my 2 white ccs pads with the same issue. I use a Meguiar's 5"BP on my udm and the white ones can't stick to it. Othor colors are fine. they also work on the rotary fine.

I'll try and get some new pads, probably going to order some Meguiars pads.

Quick question. Do other brand pads have the same issue at speed 6, or is this a LC CCS exclusive problem? Thanks again to all who are chiming in here :)

only the white ccs pads have these issues in my case. All other colors are fine.

There are many types of hook on the BPs, the regular "J" hooks will stick to anyhting extra tight, but alot of the BPs for detailers are starting to come with the small non-woven "T" hooks that make pad removal more easier as it puts less pressure from delaminating the "loop" part of the pad.
