Heavy once, light several times...

As far as saving the clear coat is concerned what would be better, a few light polishes throught the year, or one heavy polish once a year? Over say four to five years. Anyone ever used a thickness guage to see what the difference would be?

Never used a thickness gauge, but IMO it doesn't matter which way you do it, it's all about how much clear you take off total. IMO if you have to polish more than once a year you're washing/etc. wrong and that's the thing to address.

FWIW, I've polished some of our vehicles for years and years without any clearcoat issues. As long as you're not getting really aggressive on a regular basis I woudn't worry about it. Four or five years isn't all that long and if you're using a PC as opposed to a rotary it shouldn't be a problem. But again, a frequent need to polish means something's wrong.

Sorry the above isn't a decent answer to your Q :o It's just really hard to generalize stuff like this...the light polishings probably won't ever add up to anything significant and once-a-year sorta-aggressive work is almost certainly OK too.

I guess my question was if you use something like rmg on a finishing pad every four to six months or something like that. I do see what you mean though. The main reason i ask is because in my parking lot at school people tend to either be drunk all the time or have huge ummm... rears because you always get brush marks on the sides of your car.

Heh heh, sounds like your parking situation will provide some real challenges :D

The RMG is, IIRC, nonabrasive. Really, you can do gentle polishing, with far more aggressive stuff than that, a *LOT* without it being a problem. I'd really lean towards "just don't worry about it".
