Heating the garage?

If your garage is reasonably insulated in the Gulf Coast area, you will have no problem heating the garage with something like this.

Mr. Heater MH18B Portable Propane BIG Buddy Heater - (eBay.ca item 360103246228 end time 30-Dec-08 12:21:13 EST)

They are 99.9% efficient so you don't need outside venting. If you have to run it continually then you should open a door for a couple seconds to replenish oxygen, there is a low oxygen sensor on the unit. But never had a problem last year.

I use something similar with two electric ceramic heaters to assist and maintain my garage up here in Canada. I use the propane unit to bring up the temp to about 15C or 60F then maintain with the 2 ceramics.

I go through about 1 20lb tank a month or so.

I hope I can help those of us that are looking at heating for the winter months - here is all my research on heating my 24’ X 24 closed in roof garage that I also insulated last year.

The best site that I can offer for information on what may fit your specific heating needs can be found at heatershop…a lot of info and should help on your decision process.

I purchased a Mr. Heater Big Buddy Propane Heater Monday from Northern Tool.

Big Buddy Heater on Sale - $99.99

Fuel Filter - $8.99

AC adapter for fan - $14.99

12’ Hose connector - $27.99

20# Propane Tank - $34.99

Governor’s take - $11.22

Purge & Fill of Propane tank at Ace Hardware - $19.01

Total = $217.18

The researching, shopping at Northern & collection of my first testing = OH Baby life is Good – I am gonna be warm or even toasty from now on.:clap:

Testing time frames along with temp’s right out of the box done on Hi setting:

Propane tank located outside of the garage.

Time Inside Outside Wind steady at 10mph - Roswell, Georgia.

2pm 48 42

3pm 68 42

4pm 76 42

5pm 78 42

6pm 82 42

Propane usage by lifting and guessing maybe a quarter of the tank?

Kerosene - I know nothing about it: Is it relatively clean burning? How does one go about buying it?

This is the unit I have in my shop:

DuraHeat Convection Kerosene Heater - DH2304 at The Home Depot

My main bay is about 20'x30' with 12' ceilings. The doors on either end are basically 12'x10' radiators, just thin sheets of aluminum. I put the pink foam insulation panels in the voids of the door which has helped a ton to keep the heat in. Other then that we have concrete block walls with no other insulation to speak of. This heater runs all day, 7:30a-5p on one tank, about 1 gal of kerosene, and keeps the bay around 50 degree F when outside temps are in the 30's.

Downgear, can you give more specifics about the heater? Where you purchased it, size, bought it new/used, etc. Thanks

Here is a link that has all the information you should need. If you look on the home depot or lowes website you wil be surpised at how many different ones they have. For me, electric is the only way to go. Its quiet, clean and I get to detail in the winter wtih a t-shirt.
