Heating a Garage...temporary or full time solution

How much did the 18,000 BTU run you? Can I leave it un attended while it heats up because my car is stored at my parents house.

Can I do it with a cheaper heater.less BTU if 18,000 is very expensive?

What about a ceramic fan driven heater of some kind? Like the type they have in shops and blowing over large store entrances? That way you don't have to worry about fresh air. The only thing is, it's electric...

i bought a 110,000 btu heater for my old garage, and my mobile tent. it can heat up to a nice comfortable temp in about 20 min from 0 deg. it cost me $120, the 100# tank is $60, and around 2$20 to be filled. I get around 10 hours from a 100# tank running on high heat, low is fine once the place is heated though

Damn......I need to look into this.

Do I need to leave a door cracked or anything when running propane? I can imagine the fumes are not great.

Also, how far away from the car does it have to be so it does not damage, burn, etc the paint.

I just bought a 30,000 btu unit at a local hardware store for $95. It says it's good for up to 700 sq ft (about a 2 car garage) and it runs 14 hours on a 20 lb (gas grill size) tank of propane. Ventilation should be used and it's not a permanent solution. It got my garage up to 60 or so degrees quick enough.

My garage will hopefully get insulated this summer, so it should work even better. I do plan on adding a more permanent solution such as a small furnace or heating unit so I can have it maintain 40 something in the winter and warmer for when I actually work in there.

We are expecting temps back in the 20's this weekend, so I guess I'll get to see how well it warms up the space in the lower temps. The place I bought it form said I could return it and exchange it for a larger model. The 30-40-50 btu model runs $180, so I was hoping to get away with the smaller unit.

Mine was free. It was being thrown out during a remodel.

It is mounted 48 inches above the floor. (heating contractors may have used ones)

The heat is directed up.

I use a box fan hung from the ceiling to help direct the warm air to the center of the garage.

Propane burns clean, no foul odor.

I have a 200# tank outside.

Local codes may prohibit use.

Mine is a Comfort Glow.

I have seen the 30,000 BTU model for about 130.00 at Home Depot.

It cost 80.00 for the Propane supplier to set up the account and assist in plumbing it. That included the tank regulator.

When it runs out I call them and they deliver a new one. Last delivery (Dec 2003) was around 60.00.

My garage is not attached to my house.

IMO I would try to get a natural gas heater installed. or similar permanent *safe* solution.

I bought one of those $100 cannon propane units once.

a. it stunk and did not seem safe air quality wise

b. the wires on the inside caught on fire after 2 hours use:scared

Roughly how much am I looking at to live in your garage, per month? 48 is fine with me, I have tons of fleece.

:p :p Bring your fleece and join me. I am out there a lot. My wife sees to that!:scared

There is an HVAC contractor in our building. I plan on asking them for advice on a permanent solution. I live in a community power area, so my electric bill is quite cheap.
