Its that time of year again! What is everyones method of heating the garage? The ones of you that do not have gas. I dont and im all electric and I want something to help with the cold this winter. Im thinking something small like a propane tank with top mount heating element.
 
We're putting in giant wood burners this week for ours. We have natural gas hooked up here but the dang things are at least 30 years old or more and are about as efficient as a match stick in a hurricane. Would cost us more to heat the place than we pay in rent. And since I own 10 acres of harwood trees we have ample supply of wood.
 
This thread makes me wonder - should I move all my detailing supplies indoors? It will likely get below freezing in my garage for a stretch this winter (DC metro) and I know that petroleum products and mixed products tend to separate or deteriorate in colder weather.

Im in MN and I keep mine in our garage all year long. To be fair, my garage is below the living room ala townhouse style so it says usually above 20 degrees or so. I just take insulation (you know the pink stuff) and wrap it around my cabnits and its all good.
 
Also i think i will go for the blue flame model instead of the infrared. My thinking is the blue flame will take the chill off quicker and would dry carpets better. I might use an electric radiant heater though.
 
I have gas going to my garage but my father said that i shouldnt have an open flame heater in a garage that houses cars and my products. Would this be a problem?

My father-in-law lives in FL. Usually around this time of year my wife and I visit him.



I dunno, to me there is something "wrong" with spending Christmas laying by the pool in your shorts. :lol



I'm a Yankee and I need my change of seasons!

For me I love those tiny little Vornado heaters. They heat the coils and spin the air out in a way that reflects backs and shoots all over the room. These work great inside and can easily bring the temparature up to about 10 degrees warmer. If you have another heating source it will work even faster if you use both.

Any type of gas will have a flame, pilot light or spark. Even electric might spark or have a heating element temp above solvent fume ignition. If using gas you should have an intake and exhaust vent, to control humidity and air quality.



If you are using a lot of solvents or your car has a gas leak you might have problems.



One more thing is that a lot of solvent fumes are heavier than air and might pool up in a low corner. Might be a problem is the heater is on the floor.

I wonder what would be best to heat a garage that's about 30' X 24'? I really don't want a huge tornado style heater, but then again I may need one for those days when it's -5*F outside.
 
'i stumbled upon a torpedo heater on craigslist and had to buy it.

for $ 200... i know i didn't go wrong. I saw the same ones at home depot for like $ 550.It gets the garage hot as hell in 5 minutes. I cant wait to get out of the single car garage into something bigger.'
 
An electric heater is the only thing I would recommend for you. Gas/propane heaters are used to heat up something outside, like a big tent or something.
 
I have the same thing as pl silverado,but it uses propane for fuel.

I have used it and works great the only thing to remember is you MUST leave a door or a window open a bit to get fresh air in.its a perfect solution for heating a cold garage quickly when you need it to wash or oil change etc.
 
Yes it's getting cold here in Ohio too. I usually take all my stuff inside. Then lug it back to the truck to do a vehicle. Like this morning!:eek:
 
I use one of those small ceramic electric heaters. Of course I am in Nashville,TN, not Anderson. I can heat a two car garage fairly well with one of these heaters. Is your garage door insulated? Makes a hugh difference...
