Health Care for Detailers

Hello all, this is my first post on the site, but plan on being more active on the site. I own and operate a mobile detailing service and have been doing it now for 3years, only part-time. I still have a full time salary job with great benefits and pay. BUT, I hate it and really want to get my business bigger and make it my main income. However...last October my 3year old son was diagnosed with Lukemia. He is doing fantastic and is in remission and will most definalty live to be an "old man".

With that being said, I need to have great benefits to cover his med. bills. Right now, our plan is great and has covered most everything he has been through. SO...what do you full-time guys/gals do for health care/benefits?? Any information is appreciated, or links to websites. I have search the web, but its always better to ask the experienced.

Thanks:usa

Check out the MEGA health plan. I think it is offered by the association for the self employed. I have no idea how much it costs, but I know it exists. The key with health insurance is to purchase it with as large a group as possible. I currently do not have coverage, however, my wife and daughter are covered so I can live with that. If you find a good plan for a reasonable price please let us know. Maybe us Autopians can get together and purchase group coverage.

I would absolutely recommend researching different insurance options BEFORE quitting your current one. Especially with regards to your son. Thank God that he is doing well, however in my experience Insurance Companies will only cover people who are CURRENTLY healthy and have been so for the last 10 years. About 12 years ago my mother had a quick bout with cancer, (in her bladder, did not penetrate to the rest of her system and it was removed easily and quickly), however for the next ten years it was impossible for her to get health insurance. Every time she tried they would turn her down because of the cancer.

IMO health insurance is one of the biggest scams in this country, forget used car salesman, forget politicians, insurance corporations are the making a killing from the middle and lower classes.

Also a new big thing with small businesses, and I am sure large businesses will follow, is generic only plans. They are cheaper but you only can get generic brand of medicine.

Welcome to Autopia! I'm not a professional detailer by trade but couldn't resist posting on this topic. I am happy to hear that the situation with your son has turned to a positive outlook. Positive news is always excellent and I wish y’all the very best.

I can relate to insurance reasons being a major factor in career choice. I had a double lung transplant in 1995 and fortunately I have a great job in the IT field with great health benefits. I could not imagine having to pay the expenses I incur if the benefits were not available.

However, the thought of detailing full time has crossed my mind. It’s always an eye opener when I receive a statement of coverage in the mail on how critical my “real job is. Therefore, I do enough detailing to keep my passion at bay while taking advantage of the health insurance offered by my employer.

As mentioned it will be very hard to get coverage with a pre-existing condition. If you do get coverage it will probably be so expensive that you’ll get into financial trouble which may lead to being unhappy as well.

I wish you luck with your search. Keep us informed of what you find.

Welcome to the board , I'm sure you know health care isn't cheap . I just made out a check for mine today ( I have no wife or kids) I pay each quarter $1058.00 with Blue Cross . When I need care I don't want that run around you get with HMO's so I pay for it . If I were you I would keep your job for the health care and continue to detail on the side . Think about it long and hard before you quit. Good luck

Regards

Jerry

Wow,thanks for all the responses. Yes, I knew it would be a challange, but I going to find the best health care for my son...if I do decide to go fulltime. I knew pre-exsisting conditions can always be a problem for people trying to find health coverage. Iwill try the SBA for some possible leads and try the MeGA network as well.

Iwill definalty keep everyone updated on my searches and my son as well. He loves our Corvette and he is always helping me in the garage....got to start them some time.

Thanks again

Sorry to say, but it wont be cheap :( I have a PPO for me and my family, with $1K individual deductable, and $3K family and it's close to $750/month. Not the best plan in the world either. Prices just go up every damn year :(

I have my insurance through Assurant. I need a $2500 deductible for it to be truly affordable. After that $2500, they pay 100% with an $8 million lifetime cap. I also get discounts on eye exams, glasses, lasik and dental work. Costs me $200 a month. Other than physicals and a lower lumbar strain after a car accident (covered by the person who hit me), I haven't been to a doctor or really sick beyond a couple mild cases of the flu in the last 25 years. If I was sick more often, I'd suck it up and pay more a month for a significantly lower deductible.
