Headlights: rock chip repair?

I was wondering if it's possible to take rock/debris damage out of headlights. The plastic housings on both my cars (one's 3 years, the other 6) are pretty beat. I've attempted polishing but without much luck. Am I hoping for the impossible?
 
I've wetsanded and polished out some headlights and got good results. I think it was 2000 grit, polished with some SSR2.5 and finished up with Pro Polish, with the PC I think. So if they are not all that deep and a little hazy, you may be able to get them out.
 
If there are any deep impressions, you probably won't be able to get those out, but if you follow some of the processes described in the various headlight restoration threads here and elsewhere, you'll certainly be able to give them a whole new look, and at least minimize the visibility of the largest chips.
