Headlight Restoration - add on service....

I'm very interested in adding on headlight restoration to my business. I've been doing some research and there are several kits, etc. out there, and I just wanted to get your opinions on them before I invest. Also, I'm not choosing based on price, but on what gets results, etc. Thanks!

Rightlook.com kit:

ClearLights Headlight Restoration Kit - DA2100

Bright Solutions kit:

Yellowed Headlights Cloudy Headlights Headlight Restoration Kit Cleaner Headlight Lens

Detailing Success kit:

Attention To Details | Aircraft Detailing | Auto Detailing | Specialized Detail Training

Meguiars kit:

Plastic Headlight Restoration

Any other kits, etc. not listed you know of??? :nixweiss

Don't know about kits, but Meguiars PlastX is used by many on this forum and seems to do headlight restoration jobs pretty well.

+1 on the plastx

you can get it at kmart give it a try!

I use the PlastX with 2 different polishings pads (yellow/white) for the 7424. It does a good job and I can do the headlights/taillights in about 45 mins. I charge $20.00 as an add-on. I often approach people with clouded lenses and ask if I can repair them. Most don't even know they can be fixed. I recently did a set and afterward the owner then asked me for full details on her RX300 and G35,

I just picked up the Megs Platic polishing duo (10, 17), but haven't had a chance to try it.

I just bought my own wetsanding paper and use either the PC or Cyclo to remove sanding marks. I finished with 2000 grit, but next time I might finish with 3000 so it polishes out more quickly.

I've also seen a kit at Pep Boys that includes the sandpaper and some polishes. It wasn't very expensive, I might pick it up next time and see how it works. It was in the taillight section, not the detailing section.

On par with Scott here.

Check out your local ABS; purchase a package each of Meguiars Unigrit 1500 and 2000, (plus 2500 or 3000 if you go PC) and knock 'em out with a mild cutting and finishing pad (which you probably own). PG then 106FF has always worked well for me. Don't forget the RockBlocker. Application takes fifteen minutes per pair and the haze won't return.

Thanks for giving the service away.

We get $100 + per set.

I don't get that much but to give the service away for 20 is just that...Replacement cost is what you have to look at, in costing this out....most people think that's the only solution, we know better so don't leave money on the table

I figure in about 1 hour of work @ $60 an hour since this is a value added service. I don't do too many though, most of my customers have newer cars. Mid to late 90's Mercedes E Class's are a gold mind for this service though.

As are 99-2005 Grand Cherokees. They get awful and cost 225.00 a PIECE to replace! I'll go through a Wal-Mart parking lot and see at 10 and leave my card in the door.

From my research and memory I think there are 2 ways to approach it:

Wetsand > Polish (Either Plastic or even Metal Polish) > Finish

Or

Chemical Cleaners > Polish > Finish

My big worry is over the UV protection in headlamps. From what I've heard the Bright Solutions stuff isn't bad, nice cleaner works here and there. Otherwise Wetsanding really seems to be the simple effective restoration way.

Thanks guys for the helpful info. :)

I ordered the Plastic Pro Restoration kit from the auto detailing solutions website. Also, I went out and purchased 3M sandpaper with various grits, sand paper holder, and some Meg's plastx (I just used some on my instrument panel....WOW!) (SP?).

Now, since I've been up since 4a.m. after going to bed at 12:30a.m. (Super Bowl party) to go do some maintenance details at 6a.m. with it being freezing temperatures (done inside their garage - ONR), I'm going to go get a nice hot cup of coffee and take a nap! :D
