Hazing? Holograms? What is this?? :(

Winter's gone. Finally gave the car a proper hand-wash and this is what I get after drying! Some sort of fine swirl, hazing, hologrammy type of effect at certain angles in the sun! I'm starting to wonder if this is the effect of me doing quick bucket washes at the coin-op during our winter :( I'm not sure how to identify what I'm seeing so maybe you guys can tell me what it is??

Is it time for a porter cable polish? the car is barely 2 years old. Or do you think I should HD-cleanse and apply some wax to fix it? I last waxed the car in November in preparation for the winter. Help!

Well the bottom one looks sorta like a RIDS. Hard to say with the top one. It may indeed be hologramming. Honda paint as a rule, it typically pretty soft.

Id get a PC.

if that's all the marring you have after the winter in Canada

on that soft Honda paint IMO you are doing OK

IMO just some marring from washing of drying

Try some Megs Ultimate compound by hand.

I actually would start with SwirlX, and then ScratchX 2.0, then as a last case scenario the Ultimate Compound.

If the paint was marred that deeply from washing, it likely won't need very aggressive products to correct. :spot

It looks like someone rubbed up against the car when it was dirty.

This. I _hate_ when people do this. If your Honda has even the slightest amount of dust on it when people rub against it, you'll get these. I have first hand experience.

^ I think you're right. I've never had a buffer touch my car before and the only thing I've done is the bucket wash at the coin-ops a few times during the winter. NEVER AGAIN now.

The marring is at random areas on the door panels. It's only apparent at different angles in the sun. Should I ScratchX the parts I notice? or buy a PC and give it a light polish?

Look the whole surface over under incandescent light at different angles. You might find enough marring that you will want to use a PC to polish out the whole thing. If you don't own a machine, try the ScratchX on isolated areas by hand, and decide from there. My opinion.

^ i have a feeling the marring is all over at different angles but i'll have a look again after work.

If I go the PC route, would a Meguiars #80 Speed Glaze and a 4" LC white pad do the trick? and at what speed would you run the PC?

bill57- Heh heh, you took the words right out of my mouth :xyxthumbs

dropscience- I really dunno from very soft paint, but #80 is a nice product that oughta at least make things much better. With 4" pads I kinda like speed 4.5-5 via PC, work the #80 until it turns sorta clear/white (from its initial opaque greenish-brown) but don't work it so long that it dries.

You might need something stronger than the #80 for the worst of the marring, but it'd be a good start.

ill bet if you hit it with a QD it will go away...

I had, what looks to be, the same thing on a car I take care of regularly.

The car received an ONR wash, and a coat of 845 applied. The following week nothing but still a perfected finish (brand new car and prep). The 2nd week I ONR washed again and those results occured...I hit it with some giovanni QD and all is well! They just kinda followed me as I walked around the car...really weird!

So the QD alone didn't make it go away. But it did clean the surface for me to try ScratchX like others suggested... and guest what? it worked! I did the entire drivers side door and a bit of the rear quarter panel until i got too tired. I will most likely do the rest this weekend. The tube says I can apply ScratchX to the entire car but is that what you guys would recommend? or is there a better substitute to ScratchX that can/should be applied to the whole car by hand?

And I know this sounds ultra-n00b of me but there's a couple of things I learned while applying ScratchX.

1) You don't need a lot of pressure.

2) You should apply a small amount and work it in until it dries before wiping clean/buffing. I got lazy and thought I could apply a lot over a wide surface but only found that it would haze my paint if didn't i work all of the compound completely dry before the wipe/buff.

Anyhow, here's some pics. As always, looking for advice, comments, if I'm doing things wrong, let me know - that's why i'm here! :D

Great work! Glad it worked out for you.

Are you using original ScratchX, or ScratchX 2.0?

If you do not have a buffer and want to remove swirls and defects from the entire car ScratchX is a great way to go. Clearly it works on your car.

dropscience- Yeah, looks like you've found a product and method that work great for you. I don't see any reason to switch to something else unless there's something about the Scratch-X that you didn't like. It seems like certain products just *work* (or don't!) with certain paints so I'm in favor of sticking with the winning combos once you find them.

Oh, and I especially like the way you learned while you were doing the job :xyxthumbs
