have a P/C, now what do I need?

greetings Autopians! I'll make this short and quick to the point. I bought a P/C some years ago from Griot's Garage. I haven't been able to use it for awhile since I'm a barracks rat without a garage (Army guy living on-post). Now that my service is done and I'm moving to somewhere with a garage, I get to use my toy again on my 2000 Mustang GT that needs some serious loving. I was wondering what I exactly to purchase and from where in terms of pads and a way to mount them on my P/C? Any help appreciated, thanks! :waxing:

Probably the easiest way to find out what to buy is go to a site (autogeek.net, autopia shopping) that sells 7424 kits and buy the stuff in the kit. Basically you need a velcro backing plate and pads, I suggest CCS in White, Black, and possibly blue for starters. An orange cutting pad is nice, I prefer the smaller non-CCS 5.5" pads in orange over the CCS ones for a DA.

Here's a kit that lists what you need, this one comes with pad cleaner (which is pretty good) and conditioner (I only use when applying waxes/sealants but not really used for polishes):

Porter Cable 7424 & Foam Pad Kit - Car Buffer

You will also need polishes, obviously, something like Meg #83 is a great place to start with a DA.

About 3 pads, some polish and some protectant! Dont overbuy..........In other words, just cuz its in a kit and sounds like a good deal, may actually not be if your not going to use all those pieces. I think $200.00 is a little extreme, you could get all you need for less then 1/2 of that.....

I agree with Patrick. Not to mention their pad cleaner and conditioner is more expensive per ounce than other retailers. I would get a yellow, white, and blue 6.5" flat foam pads, a three step polish, and a wax or sealant.

This looks like a good deal....

Pinnacle Complete Swirl Remover Kit You would just need a backing plate.

Bob's (Danase's) Swirl Abolisher kit, SA1, SA2, SA3 also look like a good deal. You would just need to get a backing plate, pads and pick a wax or sealant and you'd be set. www.danase.com

I have also had good results with the Meguiar's Pro line. Look at the M83, M80, and #21 sealant for starters. You would again need a backing plate, 2 8006 polishing pads, and 1 9006 polishing pad, and you'd be set. Auto Detailing Supplies

I didn't do enough research when I first started out and bought a kit (actually two kits). I basically haven't used much from the kits and its all sitting in my storage boxes with no plans to be used anytime soon :(. I have spent a lot of time reading here, then posting questions, and finally bought myself a simple setup to start and learn.

I have a PC from a kit I bought. Then I have purchased the following items to be my standard setup, which I have been learning with:

3.5" backing plate

4" LC CCS Green pad (aggressive polishing pad)

4" LC CCS White pad (polishing pad)

4" LC CCS Black pad (finishing pad, could go with blue too)

1Z PP (my aggressive polish for use with my green pad)

1Z MP w/W (polish with wax for use with my white pad)

#845 (wax which I apply with my black pad)

After doing this a few weekends, the one thing I would change is using a larger pad for applying the wax (6" or 6.5"). I do plan on buying one next month when I can afford it. I also bought a few of the polishing pads. So far I do about 2 to 3 panels with a pad, then switch to a new pad as they are building up with a bunch of stuff and I don't want to stop and clean it right then.
