Has the internet made us dumber?

Selln...Again, there was no disrespect directed towards you. I have not mentioned names or launched insults. This thread was quite civil. Try to keep it that way, please.

Scott, I totally commend you on taking the time to point this out. We live in such a advanced, fast-paced world that the details can many times make or break it (this IS a detailing forum, after all, right?).

I figure a lot of us take the time to make sure our doorjambs are clean, that there's no dust in our HVAC vents, and that all the wax has been buffed off our paint, so it shouldn't be too difficult to compose coherent sentences. Personally, I've never experienced this problem on these forums, but back when I was a model car fanatic, I was a regular to a forum where people had the most severe ignorance for the beauty of the written word.

Now, I'm not saying people should write perfectly, but it's really a matter of being considerate when you really think about it. I assume everyone here had a basic education, so we all grew up reading books and text that were composed in the proper manner; it makes sense that we're used to reading things in a certain way right?

If you've ever talked to someone in real life that runs on or doesn't put any inflection at the end of their sentences, then you know how awkward it can be. I really would not be surprised if literacy rates are dropping across the world because of the rise of internet use by younger and younger people. Like they say, sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference.

Just preaching to the choir though, we're a nice community here at DC and I've never had a problem reading anyone's posts.

I do believe the way people write online reflects the way they are in person. I don't look poorly over people who might miss a run-on sentence or a capital letter or two. I consider this an informal atmosphere and some informalities are fine. Of the people I have met on this site, their presence through text pretty well matches their personality in person. I have enjoyed everyone's presence in person, I might add :D.

However, the stuff that bothers me is utterly unformatted text. Big blobs of words with no punctuation whatsoever. I find myself clicking "Back" before getting to the second line. The way I see it, if someone has the time to sit down on the computer, log into a forum, get to the correct area, and actually post a new thread, they owe it to everyone else to take the extra couple of seconds to proofread and put some effort into it.

A thread like this came up at another forum I frequent and it went downhill quick. The mods wonder why the bandwith is through the roof when people are posting useless crap (doesn't happen here, thank god) and using up space.

None taken, I apologize if i said anything to annoy you. I'm not a bad guy and should just keep my mouth shut when it comes to this forum. There are way to many backstabers that run to the administrator and cry about my posts. I hope you understand.

Sorry,
Sellncars
