Has anyone ever encountered this?

Hey Beemer, you'd be jealous. This is the Shellfish festival weekend. Going for some chowder taste testing on Sat, and beautiful mussels for $.99/lb anywhere!

So the customer was REALLY happy. "Gees, I can't believe it's the same car!" Great statement. Actually, all the people who work nearby were impressed.

And the best part (for me), was that he said, "so, do I bring this back every 3 months?"

I said yes.

I took more pics in bright light, but they are about the same. This one is good:

Those pictures are waaaaaaaaaay too big. I'm not worried about load time, I just can't see the whole thing without scrolling from one side to the other. Uploading them to photobucket doesn't change the size of the picture. You need to phyisically resize those to about half that size so they can be viewed in the forums. Those are like wallpaper size and that just isn't viewable in a thread.

Sorry. I've got a wider screen I guess and it fit on mine. I'll work on refining it.

btw, the mullet is still in use in some parts where I live

Looks like a typical case of severe neglect to me. I wonder why both places freaked out so bad and turned it down. Excellent work!

I understand the dealership freaking out since they might have liability. But the shine shop had been in business for 7-8 years. No reason for it methinks. Perhaps they tried a one-step and it looked streaky and panicked.

Even so, a good one-step such as Megs Color-X, or even DC1 would have made a dramatic difference if worked in properly. I feel confident that DACP and a LC cutting pad would have left the finish ready for wax without an undue amount of work.

I've been detailing for over 16 years (on my own) and since discovering sites like DC about 3 years ago, I've learned more in these past three years than I had in all the previous years. Back then a finish like that might have worried me a bit, but I still wouldn't have freaked about it. For someone "In the Business" with 7+ years of "professional" detailing time to have wigged out so badly doesn't say much for them. I wouldn't let them detail my lawn mower.

Well Don, you probably wouldn't let me polish your tupperware, I'm a rookie compared with them. Most of my work is with a LSP that is non-wax and depends on the quality of the clear coat, so I've paid specific attention to preparation (cutting, compounding, wet sanding--which I avoid, polishing, etc.).
I'm also a bit of a geek. I read. Write now I'm 750 pages in to a body shop text book. I'm on the chapters on refinishing products, materials, and applications. I've read dozens of pages on here and other places on the net. Unlike the minimum wage guys at the Shine place, I'm in this for a lot more reasons than money. Right now, I could make more money delivering newspapers!

A guy called with a 98 Toyota 4-Runner, White, one owner. It is completely dull, so he took it to a local shine place, and they couldn't get it shiny. Then he took it to the Toyota dealership, and they tried stuff, but no go. They said, "your clear coat has worn off".

What the?

First, I've never heard of clear coat wearing off evenly without flaking or peeling.
Second, there is no detailing damage done in the history of the car.
Third, it can't just be base coat left or there'd be scratches everywhere.

Has anyone heard of this? Fill me in?

It's just a strange week in detail world for me.

Great job, but I haven't seen white paint that had a clear coat. As far as I know white paint is single stage only.

;) really? I've not heard that. I know that white feels different. What kind of single stage is it? (I'm having doubts)
